I think at this point in my life all I could contribute to a CD would be to shake hands with both of them and tell them how great they play.

That would be just too cool! You guys would have a ball working on a project like that and every steel player alive would buy at least one copy. A video or DVD of the studio sessions would be a bonus and even a second bonus of tracks. Am I dreaming? Maybe but that's the best idea I've heard since Lloyd Greens last solo album. Hell why not include him too? 20 tunes-five each.

How about another Buddy Emmon's CD instead?

Buddy doesn't need to share the stage with anyone. The Bell Cove video shows that he still plays crisp new ideas executed with the soul and taste that made him legendary. And as long as he chooses to play he always contributes great playing to the situation. The same is true for Tommy.

Buddy and Paul thanks for the input, I too love to sit back and listen to others. BUT everynow and then I get the urge to set it all up and just burn a couple for the "gipper"

For me,
the point of this album wouldn't to hear how great each plays individually. We know thay can.

But to her how great they could play together,
and how they can meld their different approaches into a subtle and coherent whole.

And to imagine Buddy wouldn't have anything to contribute....
well it just ain't so.
Modesty talking that's it.

One need not be the fastest, to have an increadable arranging and organisational sense musically.

I think if the 3 of them put their heads together and got together periodically to jam a few ideas, an album of super music would result with out an doubt.

And be a huge seller too inthe steel world.

If I may be so bold to believe I'm the Tommy you are refering to, I am honored to be mentioned in the same post.Thank you.
Thinking off the cuff, I personally believe a project of this nature and magnitude would be overwhelmingly fun and I see no negatives. For me, it would be a great life experience and great adventure, aside from the enjoyment it might bring to the steel guitar community. However, I do respect and deeply appreciate the experienced, wise opinions and compliments from Buddy Emmons and Paul Franklin.

Tommy, Buddy, Paul and Lloyd; could this be done as a dvd or video? Lord knows I (and I'll wager many others) would love to watch you guys play. I just don't see it getting any better. I wish I lived closer, heck I'd shoot it for you but I'm sure that there are pros just as anxious and can do the job much better.

A steel summit meeting CD would be unbelievably cool! And yes...the thought of a new Buddy Emmons album playing his new axe with all those great new harmonic possibilities...gets me all lathered up!!!

That gets my vote.

Tommy you are the Tommy I was refering to. I liked your statement about having something for the steel commumity, that was my thought also. WE would really get off on that project as it might be a hoot for yawl.

The idea of two or three doing a DVD together would be a treat. I think that one of the things that happens to some players (when living in a professional atmosphere like Nashville) is that their level of perfection rises too high. They want their efforts to be the "ultimate" or the best they think they can do.
Way back when, I was hanging around with with Crawford for a while. The most enjoyable times were just sitting and listening to him "noodling around" on his steel as he was putting together some tunes for his next LP.
I should have taped it all.
When the LP did come out, the tunes were there but they were all "covered" with backup. It was not like the stuff I heard from him solo in his basement.
One of the neatest parts of Tommy's video is when he is just sitting around at the beginning and the end and just playing what comes.
THIS is what I would like to see on a DVD with Buddy, Paul, and Tommy-- just three folk, with great respect for each other, just playing and seeing what comes-- no arrangements per se, just seeing how the playing of each would effect the other and move them to another level.
In a sense, it makes the players very vulnerable-- shows us them when their "guard is down" and they are truly in the groove of playing.
I'd buy such a disk in a minute!

I second the "Buddy sings Bob Wills #2" That CD is in my car right now. I listen to that and all the Swing stuff Buddy did everyday while driving to work. All three of you guys make allot of people happy, not just steel players. What a great thing to do with your music. I think thats what its all about.

I have to agree with Paul and Tommy. I think a new Buddy Emmons CD is what I would like to hear. I wish I had the money to finance it for Buddy. The Bell Cove video shows Buddy playing some licks I had never heard him play before. A project with all these men would be a great assett for the steel guitar fans and players.

All great ideas here. I would also like to see Buddy and Herby Wallace do a recording together. Herby has recorded many of the same tunes that Buddy has and that includes "Rock Candy!"

Buddy sings great.what a hoot it would be to have him sing and you guys do the back up.a one of a kind cd project.and yes a new emmons cd,not so much of the hot fast stuff but the real sole of a legend as he can do.my goose bumps have cried real tears from his playing,so much feel and sole in it.you all are such an icon to us all. be blessed with health and happiness. Paul and Tommy are great interpreters of the steel guitar....but we of this venue must never forget the contributions of the first and foremost player and innovator of the pedal steel guitar....Buddy Emmons.

Buddy, you can bask in your retirement years with the knowledge that in the steel guitar world you are the player who made the steel guitar known to the great unwashed, and you are also the hero of ALL budding players! When steel guitar is mentioned, it is always mentioned in the context of "Buddy Emmons".

Quit, if you wish from the music world, but you will never remove yourself from your influence.....you are the ICON from which you will never escape!

If someone wishes to call me a "BE leg humper", then so be it, as BE would be the one deserving of that act.

Just a quick note about the fastest not being the bestest. I got one of Buddy's CD's and was playing it in the car on the way home. I hadn't paid much attention to the song list. Didn't need to, it was the master of the instrument, it HAD to be good. As I listened, a song came on that literally made me pull off the road because of watery eyes. Buddy's rendition of Bitter They Are. That kind of connection between head, heart, soul and guitar are what sets Buddy apart from the rest. I'll take a CD of ballads from this man any day.
