Idea for a "Steel Guitar Cafe"

Post by Nick Reed »

See what you think about this idea!
Get a location like Pigeon Forge, Branson MO, Lakeland FL, or maybe even downtown broadway in Nashville. Call it "The Steel Guitar Cafe". Feature some of the best gourmet food with a menu that changes daily. Beautiful inside decor like water falls, colored lights & palm trees. But heres the best part.... Employ a staff of different Steel players to rotate every 2 hours. Back to Back Steel with a Player always on stage. He or she would play by themself only using rythum tracks, or band in a box, etc as accompanyment. I know it sounds crazy but I think it would attract customers. Spectators get fascinated watching a Steel Guitar Player at work.

Put a Restuarant like this in a heavy tourist area and I'll bet it would fly. What do you guys think? Herby, if you're listening. . .it maybe the right time to move on this one Image
[This message was edited by Nick Reed on 24 August 2004 at 09:29 PM.]

Phelps may be a wiseguy with the smiley face, but most humor is based in the truth of someone else's tragedy. I think Mr. Phelps is right on the money in a very unfunny reality.

Personally, I'm just working as a steel player until a good waiter job opens up.

Nick- Maybe the LONG HOLLOW Jamboree would have a Steel night, there many steelers in the area and they could play the things people really like. I spent lots of nights there and old Bill Monroe, Oswald and other would stop by. Believe it or not I got to play there a few times with old Kenny Wayne. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

I'm pretty sure that's how the singer Phil Vassar got his big break. I think he graduated from JMU in VA & moved to Nashville to sing/write/play piano. I think he worked in restaurants & bars for awhile, then took out a loan & opened his own bar to book himself as the main act. The right guy heard him one night & the rest is history. I guess if you want more work, you can always find a way to hire yourself ;-)

Shucks, I'd settle for a beer and a hot-dog if I could just hear a good steelman! Image

I must agree with you...that part's crazy. Image

My job is closing down on the 31st of this month so I would be available. I am not good at carrying trays in both hands, nor am I a chef or great cook, I hate washing dishes so maybe I could just be the official food taster to be sure all the food is up to spec. Shoot, I would even play as well if they could not find someone else. I would bet Bobbe Seymore would look pretty good in an apron so I would hire him as the cook.

I'm surprised no wiseguy has yet asked, "Will the cafe doors be push/pull or all pull?" Image Image

There was some talk, including a proposition on this forum from someone years ago regarding a "steel guitar bar" in Nashville. Surely if it would float anywhere, it would be there.
I recall it was met by peals of laughter here. What ever happened with that ?
-John
p.s. I'd imagine, if I opened a museum to Erroll Garner in my living room, it would turn into Union Station. Any investors ?

Nick- As an animal lover I am appalled at the Animal abuse problems etc in the Nashville area.Today's Tennessean had several stories about animal abuse. Do a STEEL GUITARIST for ANIMAL benefit show and get the Tennessean to cover it and it will help animals and could be a starting point to get more attention for Steels.I have made many calls and everybody I think would help out. I would play a song that I always thought was written about my old friend, Ralph Mooney........ (San Antonio Rose).. Just look at some of the words.... "moon in all your splendor" ....... "pedals falling apart"..................JD
