Just for the record, there's a very small mention of Jeff Newman's passing in the latest "Guitar Player" magazine.

Geez, they should have had a multi-page article on him. The guy wrote a monthly column for the magazine over a three year period, he was not exactly unknown. The column was entertaining as well as informative. I dropped my Guitar Player subscription when it became clear they were not going to continue any steel guitar columns. Wrote Tom Wheeler twice about it, but he said there was not enough interest. I mentioned there might have been more interest had GP helped promote the steel with articles and columns. Oh well...

I read somewhere that the guitar to steel guitar ratio is like 600 to 1. That is less than 0.2% of the readers. In other words, you really can't blame them for not putting in articles about the steel. We have had 2 steel magazines fail because our own support is not enough to keep them going. Actually, I am very happy to see anything at all on Jeff in the guitar magazine even if it is something small. I promote the steel as much as possible but I don't expect others to do the same. Especially, when their money and reader database is at stake. The best promotion is to help out the new players as much as possible to keep their interest level high. Just my opinion....

Kurt, my meaning was not that GP should devote a big section on steel every issue, but a half page every two to three issues would not have hurt. That might even fit your 1 to 600 steel guitarists to guitarists ratio since there are usually 160 pages in this magazine. I do feel that steel guitar is a guitar and has a right to be represented in Guitar Player. Don't forget too, that for years, this magazine did survive with articles on steel and instructional columns by guys like Rusty Young and Jeff Newman (& I think buddy Emmons... but I could be wrong there); it did not go under Would regular 6 string guitarists have stopped buying GP if steel guitar pieces were slipped in now and then? I doubt it. GP could have helped promote pedal steel and by doing so might also have increased its circulation, a win-win situation.[This message was edited by steve takacs on 07 June 2004 at 07:37 AM.]
