I doubt it is a very realistic posibility that we all would come out with a CD at the same time. When we all just kinda roll with the flow and try to assist each other it all seems to work pretty well. I hope you guys will tolerate me from time to time when I post. Shoot, I probably have no business in posting this but I have come to regard all of you guys as my friends and a good friend will tolerate quite a bit.

I got these notices too and did not regard them as spam. I felt like I just got an email from a family member. I have no problem with it whatsoever.

[quote]Our good friend, Tom Bradshaw once sent out an unsolicited vinyl album to those of us in the club and you would have thought he declared war on everyone.People, steel players,were all tore up.I don't think Tom ever got his investment back.[/quote}

I remember. The album was "Honky Cat" by Bobby Black. I was a collection of pop and rock tunes, and Tom, knowing that it might not be everbody's cup of tea, sent it out so people could listen to it before deciding whether or not to buy it. All he asked is that those who did not want to keep it, return it.

Tom produced this out sent out all those copies at his own expense. He did what he thought was a service to the steel guitar community, It was a very generous thing for him to do, and personally, I admire himn for haveing done it.

Sadly, he was raked over the coals, first for producing a steel guitar recording that wasn't country, and then for sending it out the way he did. Many players kept the LP without paying for it, and Tom did in fact lose money on it. It was a very sad moment on our community's history, and very disheartening to both Tom and many of his friends.

BTW It's a VERY good record.

This is a thorny issue. When my book first came out I sent unsolicited emails to a lot of people who may or may not have been interested in receiving them. I didn't use a blind list but selected names from various sources - a fair amount of whom I already knew. I used a header that said "This is steel guitar spam". In retrospect, I think that was a bad decision and despite this being a "target market" of fellow steelers I've come to the conclusion that it was the wrong way to do my marketing and wouldn't do it again. I agree with Jeff. Spam is spam.

I don't mind getting the notification.

For some reason I got THREE of them, all to the same address. It really didn't bother me. I'm quick with my delete key.

Man, you guys are having a Hay-Day with this! But that's O.K., as apparently it need to be addressed so others don't make the same mistake.

I haven't had one email asking me to take them out of my address book, but I've been overwhelmed with folks wanting to be left in. After thinking about it, there's no reason to ask to be removed, as I will delete any and all addresses I don't recognize, since I can't be sure where I got them.

Hmmm...I haven't been fired since I was 17 when I fell asleep on the toilet while working a third shift job. I'd forgotten how it felt. I don't particularly like it, so the Spam King is signing off!

I got 2 of these. I recognized the name so I didn't feel concerned about it. Because I rarely ever exchange email with forumites I'll assume my address was harvested off this forum which I know b0b does not appreciate. Posting it in the "announcements" thread would have been the proper avenue.

I ordered it as I knew the material and recognized Mikes name. As long as you send email that does not take long to download and explain how to order I don't object

I also got Mikes email but just like some of the others, I never thought of it as spam. I've never met him in person but being a forum member I sent him some equipment to use, at no charge and received it back just like I sent it. If we as steelers don't look out for each other, who will? Keep me on your list too.

I didn't mind getting it. It was about steel guitar and that sure beats Viagra, mail order pharmaceuticals, refinancing my home, making a fortune from my home and last but not least, enlarging a certain member. If it's steel guitar stuff, I am glad to get it. I decided it must have been someone from the forum, so I figured we must be friends.

Thanks for the email, Mike. I regarded this as a favor, not as spam nuisance. I will buy the CD and rhythm tracks this summer when I'm back in the USA. So, when will you be coming out with the tab? I think the guys on your "email list" should get a discount if you do! Image steve

It didn't bother me at all,
I recognized Mike as a Forum member and didn't see it as spam.

So now here is the
“unexpected final episode twist” to this story...

Mike Headrick and I had secretly teamed up on this post all along! It’s true! Our thought was that if I posted this thread, it would drum up some controversy and even more sales! AND IT WORKED!! Great idea, Mike! But you get all the credit, I’m a dope.

I would never consider a E Mail from a Formite Spam, thats the reason I joined the forum, is to stay informed. Just guess I love Steel Guitar and the people that are involved in it a little more than some people. Nah !!!!!!!!!!

Well...spam is spam (even if it comes from a "family" member). This kind of thing could easily get out of hand, 'ya know. We have a "Buy and Sell" area, and new CD releases could also be posted in "Events and Announcements", or even under the "Steel Players" category.

Please take in consideration that we have a few thousand members here, and probably over a hundred with CD's or other stuff for sale. We could conceivably get a hundred such little "mass marketing schemes" popping up in our mailboxes every day.

Who would appreciate that? Not me!

Sorry guys...I just call 'em as I see 'em, and my "personal" opinion is that it's just not proper. Image

What about the Forum members that only take part in a topic when it's money to be made or to sell something. Other wise they don't give you the time of day. But most members do help ,and give us a lot of information for--free,thanks Joe

I hate to keep this thread going since I was the target, but I'd like to bring something to the attention of all who read this, who don't already know. The players who put out CDs do not do it just for the hopes of monetary benefit! If that was the sole reason we did it, most of us would be big-time losers. Ask anybody who has CDs for sale! They'll tell you it's not an easy thing to recoup the thousands of dollars we put into these projects, not to mention the countless hours of our lives which we'll never get back. I own my own studio and play a lot of the music myself and still have several thousand in each CD. Gigs, steel shows, mailing lists, steel guitar outlets, websites, you name it, and it still takes months if not years to for a recording player to get his money back. So why do we do it? So we can afford to make another one down the road! If it wasn't for a lot of sacrafices some (steel guitar artists) make, your steel guitar CD collection would be mighty slim. I have several more future projects conceived in mind which I want to do, but my wife and bank account put limits on me. You guys go on and shoot your darts and arrows, but if all a steel player ever takes from you is a fraction of a megabyte of hard disk space for about two seconds, that's not asking much. As for me, you won't hear from me directly again unless you've asked for it, but you will hear about the projects I put out, because I'm going to try to make my expenses back so I can do what I love to do......record music.....good or bad (opinions are varied, as this post prooves).
[This message was edited by Mike Headrick on 16 April 2004 at 12:51 PM.]

Mike, When I purchased some CD's from you recently that you had listed for sale on the forum I told you via email to let me know when your new CD would be available. You let me know and I appreciate it and I'll be ordering in the near future.
I must say, some people are getting completely jacked out off shape over nothing as far as I'm concerned. If I would want to have complete 100% privacy I sure as the world wouldn't get on the internet or have a email address!

Amen, Bro. Headrick. I haven't been too involved yet into the production of CD's and such, but I'm sure I will shortly, as I have a brand new Entertainment Production company, and studio myself. I myself, probably like a lot of others here on our forum, didn't realize how much time, work and effort goes into it. I started realizing that when I started reading a journal of a gentleman that I laid some tracks for. Man! He keeps track of everything, and I believe that is what it takes in order to be sucessful in this field. You can read his journal for yourself if you want at: http://www.steelrain.org/Journals.html
I'm just now starting to see it, and it makes me wonder if I really want to do it! I do, and I'm not a quitter either. So watch out world! Ha ha! Image Keep it up Mike!

Your friend,
Bob
