Another bites the dust

Post by Ray Montee (RIP) »

A most knowledgeable and reliable source has revealed to me that a once popular brand of steel guitars has just gone out of business.
It's a shame as only a few weeks ago these instruments were generating all kinds of public raves. With so many manufacturers and such a small market......one can't help but wonder which brand will be next to leave us.

YES! It starts with an "S". It's the only such manufacturer in Oregon; Portland. I cannot be more specific but give it a little thought and it will most likely come to you in a sudden burst of bright light. You don't often see them on the Opry but you may see more of them in Gospel Circles.

Eric, does that mean the steel guitar 'craze' is now over too? How did I miss it...? Image

If we are talking about the Sierra (I don`t know why is that a such a secret) than I`m very sorry to see that happening to them.I had couple of their guitars and they were good instruments.I loved my U-12 and would love to have one like that again. It was a beautiful guitar and sounded good ,E lever lock was the thing I liked most ,I could switch and play E9 or C6 in the second ,and on the one neck.I`m sorry to hear this.

Yup Mee too..

Had one where I played a weekend at the TS, left my stuff set up, played the next 5 with another band, the next weekend with them, and did a day show inbetween on saturday. Had to be my best week in a long time. Besides hauling pavers and rollers and asphalt paving mix inbetween. Got a little "tired" out..

The incidental part, and you might be able to relate, is that working or not, my circadean ( day cycle) "thing" is to sleep twice a day, and effetively have two days for every "people day". Kind of like Dog years. I sleep from 1 to 4-7 am, and at usually 4-5 to 7-8 pm. WHen it's "good" I get to live twice the days.

When it's bad....

There's a good W/W song called "Sometimes it's Heaven" I heard on a jukebox at the Eagles lst night. Brought back a lot of memories.

Me? I wish I had FedX truck and an Emmons D12..

I've long ago learned to be careful with the "wishing thing".

Too many came true..

" Just be careful what you're dreaming, soon your dreams will be dreaming you...." -WN-

Ya know what? I'll bet RR would be up for an investment, and possibly a new venture. Somebody should run it by him. Seriously.
That's an interesting idea, Eric! RR could own the business and you could run it for him. Ya wouldn't have to relocate to do it, and you could yank them damn blackberry bushes out permanently. Really, somebody ought to look into that. Maybe do it jointly with Pete Burak; now that he's a papa, he probably doesn't want to stray too far from home for awhile anyway...

As for towns where the country music scene hasn't declined, try Philly! It always sucked, and it still does!! Voila! No decline! Image Ya see, we have an advantage here: we never got our hopes up! Hi Pat,

I learned my first steel songs from the Winnie Winston`s book and he said in there that when girl fall in love with the steel player she must be prepared to be his bigest second love in his life, his first love will always be steel guitar.I think he was very close to the truth.I buy guitars and sell them if I don`t feel comfortable with them or if I get into financial mess.Thats what happend to my last couple guitars.I had wonderful `74 fat back Emmons and gorgeous Marlen ,both restored and set up for me.But,some things happend so I had to sell them. Now I have a great D-12 Emmons and hope to keep this one even tho it is a D-12 ,but it sounds so good that I will try to learn how to play it rather then lose that sound. So will see.Am I married, yes.

Tom Baker is the guy that I was referring to that has been operating the shop here in Portland.

I say "young fellow" as he's "my age".

I'm sure he'll do fine.

ERIC you might even offer your "STOMP BOX" that you shared with us here on the Forum in a family photo, a few weeks back. Hadn't seen anything quite like it before or even since. It might be an edge on the market.

Well Ray, I think you've seen a lot of them.. Maybe you just didn't know what they were..

I'll have a couple for you at the "Wall of Steel" Doug and I are putting on at Jubitz the 12th and 13th.

Here's one that might serve us all better..
Image

How did you find out about the "'S'" thing?

Something come across the NCIC?

Is it just a rumor?

Don C. skip town?

We're all dying to know.

Probably Tom Baker more than anybody.

If it's not true, I'd get out the blackberry whacker and paint up that poor old sign before it becomes true...

back to the topic at hand..

If I was a principle owner or the owner of any company where comments or rumours were made about my business or the condition of my business I would be alarmed.

It's real easy for us to tell all up here at :www.IcanTypeAnythingIwant.com: but the real question is..

should we ?

In a situation like this concerning the company at hand perhaps it is best left to the owners to pass on any news that is relevant.

tp

and yes, we do own a family run business as well so I can see this from the other side.
[This message was edited by Tony Prior on 11 August 2003 at 07:21 AM.]
