HSGA Ho'olaulea 2005

Post by Derrick Mau »

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association Convention kicked off today with great success.

Image

Here's a look at the turnout at the Ala Wai Clubhouse.

Image

Duke Ching, relative to Jules Ah See started out the program with his newly bought triple necked Fender Stringmaster.

Image

Canada's Mike Scott came with his long scale Rickenbacher frypan. One of the sweetest sounding frypan's I've heard.

Image

Tom Ikehata of Japan wowed the crowd with his super touch and tone.

Derrick,

If you got your slot in the manner it appeared; That was WAY cool; KUDOS and great respect to Bobby. You did great. I enjoyed the talent and spirit of all allot.

(Previous comment edited out and reposted Here).

I hope to get down to a couple $10 days of the Convention this week.

KUDOS to all that worked hard to put things together for the Convention.

Aloha,
DT~

First day of the members performance at the Queen Kapiolani ballroom went smoothly. There was a lack of backup musicians as Ian Ufton, and Bernie Andaya couldn't make it this year. I got drafted as soon as they found out I had a ukulele, so not much pics for today.

Here's Hal Smith from Vancouver, Canada.
He plays in the style of Dick McIntire.

Don Keene, USA

Some of Lion Kobayashi's students also made their way to Hawaii.

Derrick, we didn't meet at Joliet, but you are some fine ukulele player. It's no wonder they grabbed you.

Thanks Howard. hope to meet up with you in Hawaii sometime.

By the way, the single necked yellow Fender that this Japanese girl is playing was made in Japan and she said it cost her the equivalent of $3,000 American dollars! It looked like she had just bought it yesterday and was in mint, mint condition.

Gerald,

It's not unusual for folks to not get what I'm saying Image. I'm not sure what part you are referring to; Please quote.

The most important part IMHO was: "KUDOS to all that worked hard to put things together for the Convention."

Thank You,
Aloha,

Denny,

You said
<SMALL>I hope the HSGA recognizes by 2007 that the steadily declining internal amateur production ain't gonna continue to do justice to the HSGA and talent of the Jerry Byrd Hoolaulea. </SMALL>
Honestly Denny, the HSGA would love to have Sol Hoopii, Dick McIntire, Jules Ah See, Barney Isaacs, Andy Iona, Feet Rogers and Jerry Byrd play a set but it aint gonna happen. I wish it could but we have what we have.

There's an old Yiddish expression that addresses things that just can't be, it translates...
<I>
"If my Grandmother had balls, she'd be my Grandfather"</I>

Sigh...

It looks like lovely time. I was REAAAALLY hoping to make it to Hawaii with my wife to partake in this event this year, but financial circumstances dictated otherwise.

Too bad the event can't be outdoors, surrounded by palm trees, and with the sounds of the ocean. Hotels, with their institutional furniture and fluorescent lights, just don't have the same vibe. But, at least the music was great, I'm sure!

Todd,

There's always the HSGA Joliet convention this October 13-15, 2005.

By October you will want a break from that oppressive Florida summer heat. What better way than to enjoy Hawaiian music in a crisp, clean Midwest fall setting. Image

But, is Joliet a clean town? Image

Why not bring the event further east, like to NY? We've got great beaches here in NJ, too. After Labor Day, prices are WAY down.

Wish I could be there repezentin'the electrically challenged.

Mike,

Is it absolutely sure you can't attend? It would be great to have you perform on stage, to jam with you and to do some generic hanging out.

Ask your buddies Rick Aiello and HowardR about HSGA Joliet. Image

There is the Joseph Kekuku (spelling?) Festival the weekend prior to the HSGC that takes place in NJ.

Between these two weekends, the music and the dancing, I'll be slack keyed & knock kneed...... Image<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by HowardR on 27 April 2005 at 07:31 AM.]</p></FONT>

Hi Todd, We do have 2 outdoor events scheduled for the convention which is coming up this Sunday. It'll be at Kapiolani Park and the Ward Warehouse Shopping Center.

We actually had a third site at the Ala Shopping Center but our slot was bumped at the last minute by some jazz group.

Anybody who knows me knows that I love the look of white slacks. If I were in charge of the convention, there'd be lots of free chocolate pastries and no forks or napkins.

Thanks, Gerald -- I'll keep that in mind. However, my trio is playing The Hukilau (www.thehukilau.com) at the world famous Mai Kai in Ft. Lauderdale from October 6-8, and we'll have pretty much blown our "vacation" dollars (and livers) by that point! As far as I know, we'll be the only hapa-haole band there.

We are going to be in the Chicago area this summer for Exotica 2005, though (http://www.pegboardchicago.com/exotica/). I think we'll be the only hapa-haole band for that, too! I think we're playing the brunch on Sunday, too, which should be a lot of fun.

I'll think about Joliet in October. If finances work out, that could possibly work!

TJW

THANKS A MIL for the continued coverage, Derrick.

My car broke down and waiting for parts. A Friend loaned me a car ...and da modda'n-law wrecked it last week Image. Trying desperately to find transportation (60 miles) to the Convention before it ends. Being held hostage of circumstances ....ughhhh. Image
