IE problem

I'm using Windows ME and I have a rather annoying problem with Internet Explorer. I'll use the Forum search as an example;

If I go to search , pick a topic, click on it, and then hit the back button, it will not take me back to the topic list. A screen message will say " Warning: Page has Expired The page you requested was created using information you submitted in a form. This page is no longer available. As a security precaution, Internet Explorer does not automatically resubmit your information for you.

To resubmit your information and view this Web page, click the Refresh button."

I then must go back and re submit the information manually in order to proceed, every time. How can I disable this function?

If you left-click on a link, usually IE will replace what's in the window. What works for me is to right-click on each link, then when the little menu pops up, click on "Open in new window". That way the Steel Guitar Forum main page is always available. And when you open a Buy And Sell window for example, you can leave that window there while you open a new window for each thread.

Unfortunately there is a limit of about 20 windows due to very bone-headed memory management in Microsoft Windows.

Howard-- Ernie's advice may well alleviate your problem.

There used to be, in the 'advanced' properties for IE, a 'refresh' control. You had the option to 'never', 'if changed', and 'always' refresh web pages. Looking in the options for version 5.5, which I'm using, I no longer see that control. Under previous versions of IE, your problem would indicate the control was set to 'never'. --Everett

Earnest, thanks for the advice but that doesn't seem to work.
Everett, I've gone to advanced properties and security settings but there is no refresh control as you describe. I have five computers that I use (different locations for business as well as home) and only the one with Windows ME does this. I'm wondering if there is a control setting, but perhaps I'm not familiar with the terminology used and do not recognize it.

In IE 6, it's: Tools-Internet Options-General-Temporary Internet Files-Settings. I set mine to: Check for newer versions of the page-Every visit to the page.

Mark, I'm on a dial up connection. I followed the same instructions that you gave Jim, and I'm getting an error message:
"DHCP server is unavailable."

Howard,

I forgot to mention in my original directions. You must be "dialed-In" in order for the Release/Renew to work. Try that and then let me know.

Mark, yes, I read that in the other thread and was dialed up or online when I performed that procedure. I've tried it a few times.

Howard,

What company is your ISP?

You are on a dial-up connection, correct?

Have you tried another browser, like Netscape. Does that resolve any issues?

Mark, I'm on AOL with a dial up connection. I've not tried any other browser. I was also told to be sure that my cookies were enabled. I will check that when I return after the weekend.

I have zero experience with AOL so I am really at a loss for help. Maybe an AOL user can help out, but here is what I think AOL does...please correct me if I am wrong.

They provide you with a dial-up connection to their intranet which you then surf the internet from their domain. So in fact you really are not connected to the internet, but the just the AOL domain. I think that is how AOL works. I also thought you had to use the AOL browser built into the software? Can you use Internet Explorer? Like I said, I have no experience with AOL so I am taking lots of assumptions.

Is there a FAQ section on AOL you can go to or a HELP section?

I would try that first.

When I visit my girlfriend who uses AOL, I connect to AOL, minimize it, and use a regular (real, full blown) Internet Explorer. I copied my Favorites folder to her computer and surf normally, albeit much slower than my broadband connection.
