Modem troubles

Post by erik »

I was online and i couldn't load a page so i decided to disconnect and reconnect. Well, now my modem doesn't work. I click connect and i get no dial tone. What could be the problem? I have a HSP56 MicroModem. It is hooked up to COM4. I am currently using my webtv. I can't retreive my mail right now.

Your modem might be locked up. If it's external, unplug the power cord and plug it back in. If it's internal, shut down your computer completely, turn off the power for 10-15 seconds and power up again. It sounds like your modem was the reason the page wouldn't load in the first place.

erik,

I think Jim Smith nailed this one! Sounds like your modem has become "clogged" with packets. Unplug the power and let it sit for about a minute and then plug the power back in. That should solve it.

I'm back! Thanks guys. For referrence, the first time i tried to reconnect back when my troubles started i got a message saying my modem was already in use. Then each subsequent message said there was no modem. or it was installed incorrectly. Here's the funny part: I tried to connect about 10 times. Every time i turned my audio up to listen to the dial tone. Only now did i realize my audio was not plugged into the computer. So i kept hearing nothing but hiss. LOL

Just curious, does the fact that my modem was jammed indicate that perhaps my computer has been taken over? Could there be information going through my modem i'm not aware of? Would comparing the bytes received vs sent tell me anything? I think i will reinstall my Norton antivirus. Originally i installed the whole Norton Internet Security package, and it was unbearable to surf the net.

erik,

No, because your modem was 'clogged' does not mean your pc has been taken over. Your modem was being worked very hard and jammed.

I do recommend using a firewall, granted it is harder for people to get into a computer if they are a dial-up user, but I still recommend a firewall.

And erik...please reinstall that Antivirus software! If you have been reading any of the other posts about a recent virus going around you will want to put that back on.

Please feel free to email off the forum and I will help you pick out and set up your antivirus if you are having difficulties.

Take Care,
Mark

I might suggest Zone Alarm for a firewall program. Also get a copy of Ad-ware. It will get rid of unwanted ad stuff on your computer. I run Zone Alarm all the time and Ad-ware about once a week. IMHO Both are very effective.
