Normalizing Wave files

Post by Joel Glassman »

I'm starting to compile music and burn CDs,
(from a variety of sources) but the Wave files are often at different volumes.
Is there way to normalize Wave files in
a batch process? My Wave editor (Nero) has a normalize function, but hopefully there's a more automated way.
(remember that old Martin Mull tune:
"Let's say you and I get normal,
it don't have to be so formal..." :^)
thanks, Joel

DePopper is a great program for removing pops and hiss from recordings. I use it to clean up all my LPs before burning to disk. It also normalizes. Just load the files and walk away. Real simple to use, inexpensive, and full function trial. http://www.droidinfo.com/software/depopper/index.html
MP3 Workshop and CDex are free, and normalize as well as convert to mp3. Cheap at twice the price! http://myhome.iolfree.ie/~mp3workshop/ http://www.cdex.n3.net/

Hi Joel,

Are you using Nero to burn cd's as well? If you are, simply build your playlist for the cd, (all the files in the left-hand window) your directory structure in the right) select all of the files you want to burn, and select "properties" from the pop-up menu. One of the tabs is for normalize, if you select it with all of the files 'selected', it will normalize on the fly. You also have two normalization options, I use the level normalization, and usually normalize to 98% on mix source cds. Hope that helps.

Carter--Great idea, didn't think of that.
I do have the Nero burning software
but have been using the TDK software
(which came with the burner)
because it is so simple and direct.
Will have to check out Nero for burning.
It has very good reviews.

Tommy--just downloaded a DePopper
demo last night--haven't tried it yet.
Got it for rare scratchy LPs basically.
Do you use it on live recordings from cassette tapes? That's the format of all my lessons/live recordings.
thanks everyone--Joel

Joel, actually, I've only used the options to 'Minimize Big Clicks' and 'Minimize Small Pops' It does this better than any others I've tried. I'm still working on my LP collection. Haven't got to the tapes yet....If you try it on tapes, let me know how it does. The 'Minimize Noise' option is supposed to remove hiss and rumble.
