System Resources?

Post by Chip Fossa »

Hello gang,
I know that ystem [R]esources has been discussed here in the past, and, without going thru a long search, could someone straighten me out again on this function.

I believe it was said that SR should ideally be in the upper 80% range?

On start-up my SR comes in at 72% [today, anyway] and I've seen it as low as 62% after the PC has been in use for a while. Months ago the SR seemed to be [on start-up] around
88%. Lately, SR has been in the low 70%.

Here are the PC stats: HP Pavilion with Windows ME; 733MHz; 319RAM; 27.9GB - 7.91GB used - 20.0GB free.

Thanks all, for any enlightenment you can send my way on this SR issue.

Hi Chip,
I asked that question a few months back and Jack Stoner was able to help me out.
Basically my system resources were being taken up on start up because of a lot of programs that were being loaded right at startup. Things like winamp and alot of sound programs were told to start when I didn't need them to and it was just dragging down all my resource space.
Most of these programs you can disable at startup untill you are ready to use them through there properties or preference menu.
Hope this helps.

Hey Chipper, you're worrying too much. A lot of folks seem to be bothered if they see the machine's remaining resources dip below some arbitrary value.

Right now my computer's resources are at 53% and I'm doing just fine. It's true that you want adequate resources to load/run whatever application you choose. But that app is designed to run with a finite amount of ram.

So long as its required/optimal memory is available, how much is left won't make much difference. Think of this way:

You've got 128 gallons of fuel sitting in cans by your truck. The truck can only hold 40 gallons. Makes no difference if there's 88 gallons or just 1 still left in the cans after giving the truck all it can use.

We do want to leave a healthy amount of 'resource' available for whatever might come up but why insist upon only using 25-50% of our machine??? And remember, the 'resource' number you get from ControlPanel/System/Performance is only a very broad aproximation.

Loading SystemMonitor and looking at the several categories would provide better info. There are many things to consider when optimising performance and I know I've over simplified but the main thing is - don't worry too much. --Everett

Thanks Ev,
As always, you have been very reliable in your assessment on PC functions. I'm continuing to grow older with all it's attending pros & cons, and worry is certainly one of those cons. I hate worrying.
I witnessed my parents [God rest their souls]
worry, worry, worry, worry.
I swore I was never gonna let worry get the best of me. As you get on in years, you have to be most vigilant on this one. It just creeps in on ya.

OK....I am not and will not worry about stupid system resources. Actually, I'm quite pleased with the way the PC has been operating.

Thanks again Ev...ChipsAhoy

Everett-

I know it's a matter of semantics, but I'd say it's more like having a gas tank that will hold 30 giga-gallons, and a fuel pump that will only deliver a certain amount of gas through your 319 barrel carburetor to your 733 cylinders in a given time period.

Chip, unless you're running some really serious number crunching software, like a few CAD programs, and the like, I wouldn't worry about your system resources. It is, however, a good idea to go through and figure out EXACTLY what these little pre-loaded "taskbar" programs are, and what exactly they do. If you're positive you're not using them for anything, (like that IDIOT Bonzi-Buddy that always automatically tries to install itself on my computer), get rid of them. That'll make your computer run more efficiently, but probably not enough to make it noticeable on the machine you've got.

Chip,

If you are running Win98, you can go to the 'RUN' menu and type 'msconfig'.

Then go to the last tab "startup". This is a check list of all the programs that are running on your machine. Take the check mark out of Real Player, Bonzi, Comet Cursor or other 'extra' programs.

Also go to your 'Start' menu and go to 'programs' and then 'Startup'. Go ahead and remove Microsoft Office from there and anything else that may be running that is extra.

Let me know if you would like specific answers for your programs running.

Yes, I do like my resources about 90%. It gives me the flexibility to do a ton.

Thanks Michael & Mark.
For the record, the PC in question has
windows ME as it's OS.

In START/PROGRAMS/STARTUP, there is nothing listed in there.

In MSCONFIG/STARTUP, these items ARE checked-off: System Tray; Scan Registry; IntelliType;
vsc32cnf.exe; vscvol.exe; HPScanPatch; HPSCANMonitor; Microsoft Intellitype Pro; Tweak UI; Pop-Up Stopper; and POINTER.

Hey everyone,
System resources this morning, before I did
anything, showed a whopping 91%. It's an
unsolved mystery for sure. Thanks again,
everyone.

I have a 25 X speed CD burner and if my resources gets in the 50's range it makes a coaster. I use END it All to close down all running programs and it gets me into the mid 80's range before burning CD's. Someone here put a link to download it a couple of months ago.
