Windows ME and Network Printer
Okay, this one has me stumped.
In my office there's a Canon laser printer that's connected directly to the network. It has its own IP address. It's connected to a network hub, and I can access it from any of the Windows 2000 machines.
I have two Windows ME computers that simply can't see this printer. The only way I can get to it from those machines is to "share" the printer on one of the W2K machines. This is a nuisance because all machines aren't "on" all of the time.
As near as I can tell, I need to set up a TCP/IP printer port under Windows ME. I can't find any way to do that, though. The hardware is all hooked up correctly - a utility from Canon on the ME machine sees the printer just fine and can make it print a test sheet.
I spent 2 hours going around in circles on this one. Any suggestions?

Mark, it can't find/create/capture the IP address as a printer port.
Don, those instructions make sense, but it breaks down at step 10. "ACIT LPR Remote Printing" isn't in the list.
Any other suggestions?

whoa! that's way out of line for a small utility!
I should clarify that I wasn't recommending it. I just found it on the web and thought it might help. I didn't realize it was a "for sale" item.
"Me" can be a real bear in networking. I'm glad I don't have to deal with any machines that have it. I do much of my support work with Netware servers and Novell specifically says that its Windows Clients are not certified to work with Me.

b0b,
What type of printer is it?
Does the printer have a NIC built into it?
Are you using a print server or can you directly assing the printer a IP address?
Can these 'Me' machines access other shares on your TCP/IP network?
Installing a network printer on 'Me' is the exact same as on Win98se. There should be no differences.
Can you browse to the printer through "my Network Places"?

It's a Canon CLBP-460PS.
Yes, it has its own NIC.
I access the printer at its IP address with my web browser.
The ME machines can see all Windows "shares" on the LAN. The printer, however, is not shared, nor do I want it to be. I want to be able to print without turning on a W2K computer.
The printer doesn't show up in "My Network Places" on any machine. However, I can create a port for that IP in W2K and print to it. I can't figure out how to do that in WinME. That's the problem in a nutshell.

I had so many problems with ME and networking that I dumped it and went to 2000 pro. The guys at the computer shop over here say that they've tried just about everything, and were never able to get their OWN computers to network using ME, and finally gave up-there are just too many weird things about it. Plus, ME is a bear if you get a virus-if it moves into upper memory, you're doomed, as every time you reboot, it reloads itself-and you can't get it out of there.

Win2000 won't run my music apps. I like WinME better than Win98. Everything works fine except this one network printer.
