Sleepy head

Using Windows 98.

When Ileave my computer running, it goes into sleep mode. When it detects a key punch or mouse movement, it wakes up, so to speak. This how it normally works.

However, lately my computer has been sleeping in. It won't wake up into the Windows desktop, or whatever screen it went to bed with, it wants to re-boot when I desturb it. Frustrating.

Joe,

"sleep" mode is one of Microsoft's downfalls in my book. This problem occurs with almost everyone I talk with. I like to keep my computer running all the time also, but I have disabled the 'sleep' funtion and just keep the screen saver going. Here is how to do that:

1. Go to the Start Menu - Settings - Control Panel.

2. Then select the "Display" icon and double-click it.

3. Go to the "Screen Saver" tab on the window that now appears.

4. Near the bottom half of the window is the "Energy Saving" button, click that once.

5. This opens another box and it has some pull-down boxes.

Make sure you pull down the "Turn Off Monitor", "Turn Off Hard Disk", and "System Standby" all to read "NEVER".

6. Click "Apply" and then "OK".

Done.

Make sure you have a screen saver active and set the time for it to a reasonable threshold. This way you will not get screen burn on your monitor.

Mark's advice is very good and will work well for you.

I go even simpler. I prefer to have as few things running as possible, especially with Win 9x. Therefore, my favourite screen saver is the button on the monitor that turns it off!

We think alike. I tried the screen saver thing and it work great, except funny things were happening using some software, so I just push the button like you do. No problems.

What would be the difference between using the energy saver or screen saver? It seems either will cause the screen to go black aside from the spinning object. Also, what is the recommended minutes for the screen saver to turn on? If you prefer not to use it what do you exactly mean by hitting the monitor button? Thanks.

Eric, I simply mean turn the power off on the monitor.

I never use screen savers or background images or any of that "neat" stuff most people like. Of course, I'm also a pretty boring person, but my computers typically give me less trouble than those of my friends & associates who love all the bells & whistles.
