Computer shuts off?

Post by Larry Hendrickson »

I switched internet servers to a cable hookup and now my computer will shut down on its own after it sets idle for about a half hour. I've tried to change my settings but I can't seem to correct the problem. Before I switched servers the computer would run for hours and very seldom would shut down on its own. The computer is an IBM Aptiva about four years old. Any suggestions? LH

Larry ,

I run an Aptiva also . You might try going to My Computer click- then to Control Panel click- then to Power Management click -that will bring up a page that will allow you to set your computer to never turn off automatically . Just make sure to show "never" in both options avaliable at the bottom of the page . Just click on the button next to the spaces and it will show "never" in the option lists .

That word should be in both spaces .

I am by no means , a computer expert or know much about how to fix a lot of problems that happen but I think this might solve your problem of it shuting down automatically .

Someone on here that really knows computers might be able to confirm my suggestion or change something I might have said that was wrong .

Good luck !

I also have an Aptiva that shuts off after about 15 minutes of idle time. I went into the power management and set it to never shut off. It did not help it. Let's hope someone here can help.

Well under power management...make sure it says always on(on the power scheme) and never on "turn off monitor" and never on "turn off hard disk".
Also you have a hibernation tab....go to it and make sure hibernation is not enabled(so uncheck that box).
What operating system are you runnin on your Apiva.......Oh the reason I'm coming in here is I have had an Aptiva since 95 and that same computer is running Windows XP Professional.....so I have gone through it all with this thing..... this little 233> 3gig> 64 meg computer can kick the butts of most new ones I've seen; cause they ain't runnin them right.....ah....ha.....

If the power management does not work for you. Try going into the BIOS and see if there are any options there. To get into the BIOS it differs for every manufacturer, but most of the time it is F11 or F12 at boot up.

Thanks for the replys, I think I got the problem fixed. I went into the Control panel then into Power. On my computer, the first window in Power has a box to check to allow Windows to manage power on the computer. The box was checked so I unchecked it and it seemed to solve the problem. My computer is from 1997 and is 166MZ and was obsolete the day after I bought it. Now with the cable modem it works really well except for some of these little problems I've had. Ricky, I'm using Windows 95 yet, with Explorer 5.5 and am satisfied with the speed now that I have the cable modem. Thanks, LH

Cool Larry; I'm glad it's working out for ya pal.
Stay with it.....sometimes those old computers and old operating systems work better than new. Just keep her clean and bad program free and your good to go.
