Can't access my CD player or burner.
Went to play a CD the other nite and no go. A message about the CD player not being installed came up. I went to Device Manager and there's yellow exclamation marks beside the floppy drive, the CD-rom and the burner saying there's problems with the drivers and the should be reinstalled. I tried to remove them, but they belong to a parent Vbus driver that has to be removed too. I did that and rebooted the computer and I assumed they reloaded the same drivers and the yellow exclamation marks came back. I've got a Pentium III 600 Mhz with 128 Megs of Ram. Also listed is the Microsoft Code 10 enumeration. I went to their site and that didn't help either.
[This message was edited by John Lacey on 25 February 2002 at 08:01 AM.]

John;
With the power turned off: Check the connections to your motherboard and on the devices. I had a similar problem about a year ago. One of the connectors was loose.
Good luck figuring it out!

Well, one thing lead to another and I was stuck reformatting my harddrive. I reinstalled Windows 98SE but now I have another problem. My old system had my CD and CDR in the "hard disk controllers" in my device manager. Now they're installed seperately under the CD-Rom category. How do I reinstall them into the hard disk controller? Also, my display only allows 16 colors and 640X800 resolution. What happened there?

If you had to reload the OS from scratch you will also have to reload any special drivers for your video card as well - the system went back to a generic VGA driver that only supports 640x480 in 16 color mode. Look at the Advanced tab under settings for your display. What Adapter Type does it show? That's where you will have to make the change.
Do you know what kind of video card you have? Do you still have the driver CD that came with it? If you have the CD, use that to reinstall the custom drivers and you should be all set.
But first things first - from a usability standpoint it does not matter if the CD and CDR are listed under hard disk controller or as CD Devices, as long as they work.

Sorry to hear of your continued troubles!
Most dll's can be found: HERE. Drivers for most devices can be downloaded from the manufacturer's respective sites.
Good luck!

I think I'm getting some resolution on this one. John, you're right and I just had to find the right drivers. My documentation was rather sketchy on drivers for my machine and I had to go hunting. I also talked to a tech friend and he set me straight on the device manager hierarchy. I've now got the correct resoltion and colors, now I have to reload my soundcard and zip drive. What a pain!

fyi,
I have had great success at www.driversguide.com, it's free to register and get a login, then a search for drivers is quite easy.....after flatlining untold number of computers, I've always found what I needed there, including manufacturer specific drivers.

For those of you who are looking for closure, the repair involved changing the jumper settings on the zip drive and reloading proper drivers. Also the CD player was toast and was covered under warranty. It cost me $80. and was worth it for piece of mind. I asked the tech about finding drivers as I had a rough time (even thru the places mentioned) and he says he does it all the time and knows the correct sites. It is a bit of a needle-in-a-haystack thing. Thanks for all of your input, hope we all learned a little from this.
