Real Audio to MP3 conversion

Post by Joey Ace »

Is there a free utility to convert small RA files to MP3?

I recently posted some sound samples of Al Brisco at http://www.steelguitarcanada.com/audio.htm
in RA format. RA is the only type I have recording software for. Now people are telling me Real Audio Player is no longer free, and are requesting MP3.

Geeezz, ya try to do a good thing and it gets complicated.

Thanks,

Hey Joey on your real player; go to Tools; then Preferences; than click CD and then it says.."When recording a CD" which formate??
Select MP3 and so now when you download or record...You'll be Mp3 now.
As far as changing already Ra files; I believe you can either rerecord them or redownload them....or someone else may know how to change the file type for that....but I do know that will Mp3 you now on Real Player as I had to do this before.

download winamp (if you don't already have it installed) and TARA's audio video plugin (at winamp.com, go to plugins, then select input, then look for it...) and an mp3 out put plugin, i think there are a couple out there, once again, at winamp.com, plugins, output, then browse.....

the plugins are generally .exe files, and, assuming the winamp installation used the default settings, they should install in the right place. once you open winamp. hit ctrl-p to access preferences, then go to the plugins tab, and configure accordingly
for the input, then the output.

you can also get a 'wave-out' plugin that will write a wav file to your hardrive, whatever the source is. (fyi, if you use that, there is no audio output to hear, it just converts the audio file to a .wav) you could then convert those wav files to mp3 with any number of utilities....

hth,

Carter

Still lookin for help.

Ricky, my Real Player (Ver 8 Basic) does not have a tools menu.

Carter, I can't find "TARA's audio video plugin" when doing a search of plugins at Winamp.com. My WinAmp does not play RA files so I don't see how I can use it anyway.

To restate: I have a few RA files I'l like to convert to MP3. Their location is in my initial post.

Thanks,

Joey,
There is a program called "streambox Ripper" that will convert ra to mp3 or wav. I have never used this but looks like it will do what you want from its discription. It can be downloaded at Http://streamboxripper.cjb.net

Thanks everyone!
Rebel has taken care on my immediate need.

I'll check out George and John's download suggestions so I can do it myself.

If anyone else has suggestions I'll try them too. Paul? , Ringo?

Joey, I see that you have converted the files on your page, but to follow up, the plugin 'Tara Audio Video Plugin' is at winamp.com, but I see where I typed 'Tara's', not 'Tara'. my bad. anywho, that plugin allows winamp to recognize and play real audio files, at which point an output plugin could be used to make mp3's. sorry if i added to any confusion.....
