DBF files

Post by Joe Delaronde »

I have Alpha4 Database files in my wife's 486. There are over 6300 files in the database which is much to large for a 3 1/2" floppy. The 486 is using Windows 3.1. Because of memory restrictions I cannot install a newer version of Windows. ( also I might start a world war)

I wish to transfer the files to my computer which is using Windows 98. (Athalon 1000)

If I use an older version of winzip, in the 486, to compress the file, will a newer version of Winzip restore it successfully? Or, is there a small utility program which I can install in the 486, which will transfer the file to mutiple disks, then use this same utility to restore them in my computer?

Thanks
Joe

I don't remember which version of pkzip added the functionality of spanning floppies, but as long as your version will do this, WinZip can unzip them. Pkzip and WinZip have always been backward compatible, unlike much other software.

I think WinZip or even the old DOS PKZIP files are compatible with the newer Winzip. If you are going to break it into multiple disks then you'll have to use Winzip.

Try it you may like it. Image
