Outlook

Jack or anyone else, when someone tries to send me an exe. file, Outlook gives me a message saying " Outlook has denied access to the potentially dangerous file" Is there an option anywhere that I can change to let these files come in , ?? or at least let me decide if I want the file or not.. I am running Norton 2002, & upgrade it daily or so...

You can save the file to disk and then run it. That's what I do if I know the source of the file is 100% safe.

If you have Outlook and the security patches, it has .exe and several other file type attachments blocked. I didn't think there was any way of even saving the file. I did some research on the Microsoft Site and a couple of other sites and according to those sites if you have the security update certain file types will be blocked and you can't remove them from the block list.

Have them send you the file as a zip file and Outlook will allow that type of file. Or as an alternative, if you know someone is going to send you a .exe file, log on to your e-mail server with Outlook Express to get the message.

I think Office Service Pack 2 (SP2) has the security update that makes certain file type attachements unavailable. This was a overreaction by Microsoft to some security vulnerabilities they had in Outlook and the bad publicity they were getting.

I downloaded a shareware program that lets me see and use the attachments after the Office SP2 "update". Do an Internet search for "Chilton Preview" and you'll find several sites to download it from. I would be interested in finding out how to disable that part of the "update" though, if anyone has figured it out.

It's even worse at work. They have it set up, through either their anti-virus software or firewall I believe, to not let any .exe or .jpg files through, even if they're zipped. We have to change the extension to something else when we need to send or receive them.
