ALSO - CD Burning Compromised

Post by Chip Fossa »

Yup........Adaptec, within my HP PC Pavilion,
has rejected a host of blank CD's. It has, however, accepted one, and that came out OK.
But now, 10-20 blank CD's will not respond...
Wuddle eye due now?????????????

Well, it won't fix your problem now, but I'd say.... Don't buy HP. They are notorious (along with Compaq) for cutting as many corners as possible in the installation phase, buying hardware that is very un-satisfactory from a performance standpoint.

You also might have the problem of having a bad batch of CD's. There's sometimes problems with the actual manufacturing of the media. I don't know, however, about 10 to 20 of them.... that seems a bit excessive.

It's not the Adaptec S/W. It's either the CD Burner drive or bad blanks.

I bought a 50 pack (spindle) of CD's from Best Buy one time as they had a good rebate on them. Turned out most of them were "bad" with my HP 4/4/24 Burner. But, I recently upgraded to a Pacific Digital 24/10/40 burner and it had no trouble at all with the 10 or so CD blanks I had remaining.

I think it must be the batch of CDs, I have the same set up, just installed it on our HP pavilion a couple of weeks ago and have had no problems outside of regular teething troubles.

Thanks everyone. This Adaptec, up until now, has been performing OK. I may have been hitting the wrong button, too.

Yes, the blank CD's were a 100-pack from
CompUSA, and cost like $0.30/apiece. This, too, could be the answer.

Jack is right. I have heard from several people who have had a problem when using the newer (higher-speed) blanks, or the longer recording time blanks, in their older burners. I think the newer discs have a slightly different format, and some older burners (actually, only a couple years) have a hard time reading them.

It is definitely the media.

I have gone throught many different stages of media. At first I only bought what was on sale and the cheapest. I found out that most of the time I was making bad CD's or had a writing problem. Then I had a friend tell me about some media companies cut some corners and that is how they can get a cheaper cost to the consumer.

Look at it this way...

You wouldn't put generic strings on your new Emmons doubleneck. You just bought the Cadillac of Steel Guitars, you are gonna put the Cadillac of strings on it.

I just got a 100 pack of 80 minute "TruSilver" cdr's, and they work fine in my HP 9110I (8 X 4 X 32). I was concerned with the colorless dye they use, as there is no blue or blue-green tint to the writing surface. They look really great too!

My 1/2 cents worth. I have two HP PC's, both have burners, one is a 4x burn and one is a 12x burn. Some cheap blanks work in both burners while some only work in the 12x. I think it comes down to you get what you pay for, even me, the cheapskate that I am, expects the .30 cent blank to have the same quality as the .60 cent blank. Imagine that !
Like I said, it ain't the PC, it ain't the Burners, Ok I'm stumped, could it possibly be the cheap poor quality .30 cent blanks , the same ones that the coating is falling off of a few weeks after use ?

One actual technical note thought, while burning from Adaptec, click off all the testing before burning, go straight to record CD. You may find this of value.
