Mike if you just click "more info" in the ZoneAlarm alert panel it will give you all the info on the alert.

I've used ZoneAlarm for quite a while as I was on DSL and now Cable, which are "always on" type services. However, I've found EVERY one of the alerts to be some kind of "broadcast" not hackers and according to the ZoneAlarm data they were blocked but nothing to worry about.

I get more on Cable than I did on DSL because Cable is sort of like a big LAN system with many users on the LAN.

Jack ,
Since Zone Alarm is the subject here and you have helped me numerous times before, here is a problem I am having involving Zone . While defrag'n the other day I felt as though Zone was causing the defrag. program to start over all the time so I paused Zone . When I tried to re-start it , it never would so I attempted to just delete the entire program by using windows'98 add/remove wizard.

The re-move did it's "thing" --I thought ! Now everytime I boot , I get a black screen with white letters that says " Registry or System.INI refers to this file but the file no longer exists " It refers to the file name VSdata95.vxd . I found this file in the registry but since I barely know how to start a computer, the registry area scares me to death to mess around with it. All I have to do to continue after a boot is to hit any key and the black screen goes away and the computer comes on up to normal operating condition .

Is there any quick and easy fix to get rid of the "after boot" screen ?? I will probably end up taking the computer to a local shop to get the file out because of my lack of experience but I wondered if you had any suggetions that a novice could use to delete this little problem .

Sorry for the long post .
Thanks for your past help !!

If you reinstall Zone Alarm it will probably fix the problem. No need to take the machine out and spend $$ for them to fix it.

When I do a disk defrag, I start windows in the Safe Mode. In Safe Mode it only loads the minimum necessary for the system to run and, for me, seems to be the best way to do it. I've tried shutting down everything except Explorer and systray and it's not the same as the Safe Mode.

With Windows 98 (or 95), when you first boot up (or restart) press F8 (several times) BEFORE windows comes up. It will give you an option menu and select "Safe Mode". (Windows ME is a little more involved to get into the safe mode).

Jack,
Thanks again for a prompt and very helpful answer . I always have stopped the screen saver and in this order ie: clean disk, scan disk , and then defrag . I do this once a week and it seems to keep the computer operating pretty good but this Zone thing stumped me . I will try and reload the free Zone Alarm as you suggested and will in the future, put the system in a safe mode as you suggested before running the maintaince above .

Thanks again !

John
