Hotmail/Outlook express help?

Post by John O Keeffe »

I can connect to the internet with internet explorer5 but I can no longer connect to my Hotmail through Outlook express 5.

I downloaded an updated version of Internet explorer 5 and from what I can gather this changed the settings in hotmail.

Everytime I try to download email in out look I can't seem to connect and get "Bad Request" The server did not understand the request.

I've tried going to web tech support but can't find any answers.

What I need to know is the settings for Hotmail in Outlook express.
Is Hotmail server POP 3 or Http or IMap?
What do I type in to outgoing mail server?
And what do I type into SMPT incomming mail?

Any help would be appreciated seems like I've tried everything and the Hotmail website does not give thes settings

Set it to HTTP.

Here is a Microsoft article that explains the whole setup for Hotmail.

Good luck!

I've tried both these(HTTP & POP) settings Tom and neither seems to work I keep getting "Bad request from the hotmail server and can't connect to it for more than a few seconds. There seems no be no error no(0x800cc31) similar to the one I am getting in the outlook/hotmail help site.

John,

I did some searching, and found a few things that can cause that error, don't know if these are the case with your problem.

One is to make sure your don't have 'auto detect proxy settings' enabled in internet explorer. This check box is located in 'tools, internet options, connections', then under 'lan settings'. You might also check in your account dialup settings, inside Outlook Express. I'm not sure which are active in a HTTP session under Outlook.

The other thing I found, is to disable HTTP 1.1 support in IE. (on the Advanced settings menu in internet options)

The error 400 - Bad Request, is a fairly common, default error message on servers. But not a lot of info on your specific problem with Outlook and hotmail.
Are you using a proxy server? DSL connection perhaps? Most of the errors I saw were due to incorrect proxy settings, or certain TCP ports not be allowed through a proxy server or firewall.

I hope this helps. If it doesn't, don't forget to reset those settings back where they were, so we don't complicate the problem more..

Good luck,

Tom
