DVD player

Post by Joe Delaronde »

Need some advice on the purchase of a DVD player to compliment our new 60" TV which will handle any format.
I would like CD-R/CD-RW compatible for sure.
Would prefer JVC, as all my other components are JVC, but if need be, I can change brands.
What do you formites recommend so I won't be sorry later that I didn't "get this and it doesn't have that", senerio.
What is;
"progressive scan output"
"A/V compu-link"
I'll learn this digital stuff yet.
Thanks folks

Hi Joe,

I just got a DVD system and it's fantastic. The main thing to look for in your DVD system is connectivity. Get a DVD with component video outputs (assuming your TV has component video ins, if not the s-video is the next best). Component splits the video signal into three streams on three cables and offers the best video quality. Get yourself a good set of component video cables. I recently picked up a six foot Recoton set at H.H. Gregg for $20. Picture quality is superb (I have a Sony XBR). Next, audio. Get a DVD with digital audio outs; optical, co-ax or both, depending on your sound systems options. The digital output goes to your Dolby digital or DTS surround sound receiver and provides Dolby 5.1 sound with center channel, main left, main right, rear left and rear right. It's pretty awesome!

Michael
Got a Panasonic DVD. Plays CD-R/RW, MP3s, etc. Got all the component video output cables, good ones. It also has a facility to connect to a theatre sound unit, which I'll get later. However, the sound is terrific just the way it is. Just about knocks me out of my chair.
My son & I hooked it up to the new 60" TV.
Just like going to the movies. I rented a movie called South of Heaven, West Of Hell.
Has Dwieght (SP) Yoken in it. Gary Morse plays steel in it.
My wife is happy with the setup, and that's what counts.

Thanks for the reply.
