Ron-- Get to the ControlPanel/Display/Settings again. Near the bottom, click on 'advanced'. You should then get a window with 'Adapter,Monitor,Performance' tabs.
Click the 'Adapter' tab and see if it appears correct for YOUR video card. Click the 'Monitor' tab and see if that looks OK for YOUR monitor. If either don't look right, click on the 'Change' button.
That will give you a window from which you can select the proper driver for YOUR hardware. If you have a driver disk for your adapter and/or monitor, this window gives you a button ('have disk') to let you get the drivers from it. Otherwise, Windows gives you a list that it considers compatable. If you see the right stuff, select and continue.
If you DON'T see anything in the 'compatable' list, select the 'show all' near the bottom-left to get a list of all the drivers Windows currently has. For your MONITOR, you should probably select SUPERVGA. There may be different drivers for different screen resolutions, so select what goes with your hardware.
Note that, though unlikely, you CAN damage your monitor by selecting the wrong driver. Most of the 'Standard' types should be OK.
After setting up the adapter/monitor drivers and rebooting, you should be able to set your color and resolution. --Everett
