Need help with internet options

Post by Kenny Forbess »

I ran scan disk yesterday, had some cross linked files.
I deleted the bad files, (probably a big mistake)
Gave some of them a seperate equal file.

Now I have no internet options function.
I get a pop-up screen saying;
"This option has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer,
please contact your systems administrator"

Can someone assist me in recovering something I might have deleted ?
also my printer doesn't print, although I can get the Test Page to print by holding the resume button down a few seconds.
I've been through the HP Printer Help,
with no results.

Appreciate any suggestions,
Kenny

Kenny-- Sounds like your machine suddenly thinks it's a node on a network. What version of Windows are you using??? Have you set up any 'user profiles'? Do you get a 'logon' window at startup asking for a 'user name and password'? What version of Internet Explorer are you running? --Everett

Hi Everett,
No, I haven't set-up any user profiles,and
it doesn't ask for user name on on start-up.
I'm using microsoft works, version 4.5 and ms
internet explorer 4.01 and windows 98.
Hope this is what you're asking for.
Thanks,
Kenny

Everett, do you think running the HP Recovery CD would maybe help,
and, would you choose to restore all the software that came with the computer without reformatting the hard disk ,or reformat and then restore all
of the original software?
I know I would need to back-up everything if I do the latter.

Kenny, if it were me, I would probably
RE-FORMAT, but that's me.
Run the recovery first. That way you won't lose any of your 'special' progs.
If that doesn't work..........well.........guess what.
RE-FORMAT.

Seriosly though, a system recovery should straighten out the kinks.

kenny-- Well, not knowing which files were affected makes everything suspect. Didn't Win98 include a feature to 'restore' corrupted system files??? If so, that plus reinstalling IE might get you fixed.

Otherwise, I would try just the 'recovery' without a disk format. If after running awhile, you notice strange behaviour (from the computer, that is), you can always do the more drastic procedure later.

Before doing any recovery, take the time to create a 'backup' folder and copy the folders containing data which will get wiped out. Like, your Favorites, History, Cookies, Email, etc. as well as documents you may have and want to keep. Copy the FOLDERS, not just the files they contain, and you may then be able to simply copy or move them back after the recovery procedure. -Everett

Everett, Win98 has the "SFC" function that will check for bad or missing files and allow you to restore them.

To run SFC, click on Start then Run and then enter sfc and then click OK.

I have corrected several problems (that I have inadvertantly caused) with the "GO BACK" program that came with my MS 98. It simply "resets" everything as it was at a previous date & time.

Gene, what is the "go back" program. I've never heard of that in WIN98. It must be some kind of add-on program.

WIN ME has a program to restore the computer to an earlier date - and one of the pluses in WIN ME, but that feature was never available in earlier versions.

I removed some files several weeks ago and then loaded the software for a new internet provider. When I rebooted, the pc would only bring up the blue internet-pc screen and wouldn't go any farther than that. I brought the pc to work and let the pc guru's work on it. They had to load my recovery CD in order to get it going again plus work some other magic on it. I didn't think to do a backup and a lot of my files (excel, Word, etc) were lost. Point being, backup weekly if possible and yes you'll probably have to run restore, if you can get to that screen.

Thanks Guy's,
C Allen and Everett, I'm gonna take you're advise, I'm doing a back-up then a recovery w/out reformatting,
Jack, i ran the sfc and it didn't show anything wrong in the Results.
But I really don't know what all I need to run it on, I only ran the ones that were checked already, was that the default ones ?

Kenny, I don't remember. I've got WIN ME and it doesn't include SFC. I think there are a couple of options, but as a general rule the default will usually work.

Jack-the "GoBack program", allows you to revert your PCs' hard drive back in time, repairing problems created by software, accidental changes, or viruses. It's a great utility program & avail for all but Windows 3.x users.
GoBack has a MSRP of $49.95 for the retail boxed version. An electronic software download (ESD) version of GoBack is also available with a MSRP of $39.95. GoBack is available through retail outlets, online software resellers and via http://www.roxio.com/en/products/goback/index.jhtml
