Don, It is generaly a good idea to turn off any "anti-virus" when installing ANY software
As you now know, just turn it off, and load the prog. I am wondering though, why you just didn't get a full version of 98SE, instead of the "up-grade." I am aware of some issues, with the upgrade, that were addressed in the "full version."
Just wondering.

The retail version of McAfee Virus Scan has 2 programs that start up at boot time. Clicking McAfee in the system tray & selecting exit will not completely stop McAfee. The only way I've found to completely stop it is click on Start, then Run & enter msconfig. From the popup select the startup tab. You can now uncheck the 2 McAfee programs (alogserv.exe & AVSYNMGR.EXE). After unchecklng click on the apply button. Reboot & McAfee will not be running. Reverse this procedure when you get ready to start using McAfee again.
[This message was edited by Gary Pederson on 15 August 2001 at 07:11 PM.]

Don-- I presume you have checked your Startup folder and removed/disabled any references to the AV programs -- and that you have also followed the advice, above, to disable Mcaffey. There are still three things to consider.
Many modern computers have an 'anti-virus' switch in the system BIOS. You access the BIOS by hitting a special key combination during the first part of the boot process. The key(s) are usually identified by a message that appears on-screen for a couple seconds before the Windows screen shows up.
Next, the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files are both simple text files. You can open and edit them with NOTEPAD. (Other text editers, also, would work but you may inadvertantly cause some special formatting characters to be imbedded. That would cause problems.) Open the files and type REM and a space as the first characters of any line you think might have something to do with the AV program. Later, you can again edit the files to undo the changes. You probably don't really need either file to run a normal Windows configuration, anyway.
Lastly, there may be entries in the Windows Registry file that invoke the AV program at Windows startup. If so, those entries may cause the program to run even if you have done the other things to prevent it.
This probably is not enough info and details to allow you to try and change the system BIOS or the Registry. Messing with either one could really create problems!!! You should be able to check and modify the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, though.
If you need more help, ASK before you try anything you're not comfortable with. -Everett

You MIGHT also be able to shut off the AV program by pressing "control", "alt" & "delete" simultaneously ONCE. You should get a list of running programs. If the AV program is on the list, highlight it and click on "end task".
Good Luck! I've used W98SE since late 1999, and it has been just about trouble-free since, and is IMHO a huge improvement over the Windoze 98 I had used previously.
Also, before running the upgrade istallation, back up any important files, just in case you do encounter any problems with the install (it does sometimes happen!).

Don, when you run msconfig, the only programs you need to leave running, are explorer, and systray. Those must run for Windows to run correctly. No others 'have' to run. Once you upgrade to SE, you wont see explorer listed in msconfig anymore, even though it runs all the time. But Win 98 original shows it.
The reason for the upgrade, vs. the full version, is the full won't install over the top of existing Windows, and would require a complete reinstall. Other than the option to upgrade ( and upgrade must upgrade, it won't install otherwise ), they are the same. Nothing is missing in the upgrade version.
Best of luck Don.

Well Tom, respectfully, unless I am mis informed, the upgrade is 98PLUS.
Yes, you have to do a complete INSTALL, if you go to the FULL version of 98SE. But, for all that's happening, it may be BETTER, anyway, in light of all the trouble he's having.
Don, you may have to turn off your Anti-Virus from your BIOS set-up.
While in the BOOT screen, you should see a notice to select "delete"/"F2"; or something like that.
Select it, then trash through your various screens untill you happen upon "Anti-Virus= on/off." use page up/down, to select off, then save settings and exit.
That should take care of that.
You should also be able to learn a little about the funtions of your BIOS, while you are there.
