email files

Post by winston »

Does anyone know where the email files are located? I installed another hard drive on my computer. I left the old drive in tact until I retrieve all my files to the new drive. I have been doing pretty good but when I re-setup the internet connection I had no previous emails. I use Outlook Express. I found the address book but cannot find any mail files. I hate to lose them, had some pretty good stuff. thanks in advance. Winston

Do a search of your entire hard-drive for *.pst files.

That's what Outlook uses -- not positive about Outlook Express, though.

Winston.....

Look for "*.dbx" files on your old drive. They are located several layers deep so it will take a bit of searchin' There should be about 6-8 files with a "dbx" extention. Copy all of them to same file folder on the new drive. The files will have funny lookin' names so don't be fooled by them, ther'e a mixture of numbers and characters together. (exmple: 2eft547gr437.dbx)

This info is for Outlook Express 5.0

They should be at: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express. (The "C" would be the main old drive.) I did the same thing about 8 months ago. They are "mbx" and "dbx" files. Copy any mail you currently have to a new folder in Outlook Express. Other wise the old ones might write right over the old ones. You also might be able to import the messages, but I haven't done that so I don't know for sure. Good luck!

The export/import is the cleanest way to go. But, copying the files over should still work as long as you get everything you want.
