My IE 5.5 broken?

Post by Ernie Renn »

Tonight for some reason, my IE 5.5 decided to not work. Every page in IE comes up as Page Cannot Be Displayed. What's going on? Is this some of that Code Red virus stuff? How do you suppose I fix it? I prefer IE to Netscape and would like to have it back working.
I installed an old copy of Netscape. It works fine.
Thanks for any help!

Ernie, the code red only affects servers running Windows NT or Windows 2000. It doesn't attack individual PC's running Windows 95/98/ME.

As far as not being able to access any pages, it sounds like some configuration got screwed up in I.E. Go through the Internet Options in I.E. and make sure it's all correct. Go to the Advanced tab in the Options and set it back to the default.

Ernie, three or four times during the last couple of days I've had the same thing happen where I was only getting the "page not available" message. Each time I had to "shut down" and "restart" before getting back to normal!

I found the problem! My wife had installed a password saving program called "Gator". I un-installed it, but it didn't fix the problem. Then I also found that along with the password program it installed another ad type program for using the free version. I un-installed that and now IE works fine, (after 2 hours of doinkin' around.)

Just a tip: Write down your passwords or type them into a document and save it on a floppy disk. AND: If you're using IE 5.5 DON'T install "Gator"!

Whew... Back to normal. (I guess I can put Netscape away, again. Image)

I don't know what the deal is with IE5.5, but it's very buggy.

Do yourselves a favor, and download IE6

Don't download I.E.6 yet. It's still a beta version. If you think I.E. 5.5 is buggy, beta versions are worse.

That explains that............. I recently unintentionally installed "Gator" along with another program. I have found no use for it anyway, so it's gone!

Jack, respectfully.
IE-6 has far fewer issues than IE-5.5.

Yes it IS still a BETA, but it IS ready for release.

It is the smoothest browser from the Evil Empire, yet.

Gator: Get rid of it. Totally useless.

I might suggest something else. I always have a few browsers, just in case. And I would suggest that you get Opera. You don't have to use it as your default browser, but it's small, and very fast, and a real good back-up browser. (And it's FREE)

I have been using IE 6.0 for several weeks and so far no glitches. Also Outlook Express 6.0 and it works great also.

I've been using 5.5 for a while now and haven't noticed any bugs.

If your bank is NOT alowing you in, you will need to go to the Windows Update site, and download ALL of the upDates. It's an encryption problem.
I had the same issue with my bank, and it only took a minute to get the updates, and install them.

I have had the same problem since Saturday morning. Netscape works fine, IE 5.5 will not display any pages. I tried everything suggested above, I also re-installed Windows 98 etc. Stil doesn't work. I'm on the verge of reformatting the computer. I've done that before and it's such an ordeal that I hate to do it. I guess that I'll wait a little while before I do it, I would like to hear any more possible suggestions for clearing this up. Thanks.,,,,,,,Bill
