Temporary Internet Files

Post by Ernie Renn »

Using Win98 and IE 5.5: My wife and I have done a bit of surfing lately and I was going to go to the temporary internet files to get rid of a bunch of the cookies that show up when we do that. (There are a few that I want to remain there, so I delete the ones I don't want.) While there I noticed that there is a folder ("C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5") In it there are about 40 folders. I checked them out to see what was in them. They are mostly duplicates of each other and are duplicates of the opening Temporary Internet Files file. They are however different sizes. They range from 3 MB to 7 MB. They seem to all have the same information in them. I don't know why they are all different sizes. I'm assuming that IE5 makes these folders because of the size constraints I put on available space for the Temp.Int.Files. I don't know, though.
My question is: Can I delete these folders? If I do, will it wipe out all the cookies? Could I move the cookies that I want to remain to a different folder and then move them back to the regular T.I.F. folder? I'm mystified...
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Temporary Internet files can be deleted from the Internet Explorer "Internet Options" panel. With I.E. open, click on Tools and then Internet Options and in the middle of the panel is the option for Temprary Internet Files.

"Disk Cleanup" will also allow you to remove whatever you want. You can access disk cleanup by Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

It will scan the hard drive and then give you a list with the option to delete or not delete.

Jack;
I have deleted the temporary internet files. The folders remain and still are of large size, some even larger.
I have used Disk Clean-Up. But before I do again: Can I copy the cookies that I want to another folder and replace them in the cookies folder after I delete the TIF folders? Will more of these folders be created the next time?

Ernie, I've never used either program, so I don't know exactly what they delete. I have a big enough hard drive that I don't have to worry about space (it will only use a certain percentage of the drive for the temporary internet files anyway).

But, you can copy the cookies to a temporary location and then restore them after you are done.

Ernie, this is were web pages and junk are store, (cached) so that the next time you visit a site, the browser doesn't have to reload the page from scratch.

You can safly wipe everything in the folder, and the end result will be that the next time you visit, say, the Steel Guitar Forum, that it will take a while for the pages the pages to load.

Yup. I do know that. I was just wondering about the 40 or so folders in the TIF. I have the space to deal with them, but it's just wasted space. You know, just knowing they are there...

Ernie, the easiest way to find out if deleting the folders will halt your browser is to temporarily rename that folder. Then, after renaming...launch your browser as usual and see if it runs. If you have a problem, just go back to "My Computer", or "Explorer", and change it back to the original name. Everything will then be as it was.

Why worry about saving the cookies? The only useful info they usually have is passwords and such, and they would be restored the next time you entered them.

P.S. I use only Netscape 4.07, it's the most trouble-free browser I've found!
