Great Big Bit Buckets (file storage)

Post by Bill Llewellyn »

Where's a good place to put large, publicly-viewable files for free? www.DriveWay.com shut down their public storage a few months ago so I lost my "storage shed."

With our cable modem, we got 7 email addreses. Our ISP gives out one "home page" per email address at 20 meg per page. A little creative linking, and voila, 140 meg on-line storage. The cable isp guy plays Bass in the band and he didn't know you could do that. Check your ISP's terms for a similar loophole. Milage may vary.

Bill, your ISP doesn't offer space for free, but their rates aren't bad at all. See chart.html.

How much space do you need?

Bob,

I've used about half my allowance at my ISP to this point. I have a buncha photos from a steel jam which I used to have sitting on DriveWay.com until they dropped their storage service. These photos will fit on my ISP, but I'm trying not to fill it up.

Also, I actually did have all my stel jam photos on my ISP for a while. When I put an announcement on the Forum about their presence, I got so many hits that my ISP's automatic bandwidth limitation shut my pages down for a day. So I'm looking not only for more total space but also unlimited downloads.

Unlimited storage.

Unfortunately (due to abuse), it's $5 to get FTP access (plus gets rid of popups).

Unfortunately, I can't remember the URL I went to that gives a nice comparison of all the free/cheap places to host webpages. But I know who to ask.

Note, if you can live without FTP (uploading via their filemanager interface), and can live with popups, it's still free for unlimited storage.

You can also try
http://www.nbci.com

But, their service has been miserable lately, and I keep hearing rumors that they'll fold soon.
