CRT vs LCD Monitor ???
Looks like my old 15" CRT monitor is about to take her last breath pretty soon. Not all of the colors are displaying properly anymore, & she's been acting up a little in other ways now & then too. Since she's over 5 years old, I'll soon be putting her out to pasture.
Anyway, since I'll soon be in the market for a new monitor, I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with the flat panel LCD monitors widely available now-a-days. The price seems to be dropping to near the $500 range, & I've heard that LCD monitors have viewable areas larger than comparable CRT monitors. And obviously they take up less desktop space & use less power. I'd appreciate any opinions and/or experiences in terms of such issues as picture quality, durability, etc. when compared to CRTs.
Thanks,
George

Depends what you do with the PC. If you're into multimedia and game playing the CRT types are better. If you're doing primarily office type wordprocessing, etc then the LCD would be good.
My daughter worked for NationsBank when they "upgraded" their systems to LCD monitors. They had a smaller footprint and didn't take up as much space, but no one liked them.
I guess I'm on the CRT side as I've never been impressed with the LCD screens on laptops (even high end models).

I'm with Jack on this one.....
After lookin' at the LCD screens for a bit,I notice that they are pixilalted real bad,I mean the characters are blocked off and hard to reconize if they are 12 point or less on the screen. You need to A/B a CRT and a LCD,side by side. Most folks that work with a computer will pick the CRT every time,(except those that are crampt for desk space)
LCD's make great T.V. screens. But dont fair out so well as a monitor. I too, replaced my monitor a few months ago, money wasen't an object in my decision. i oped out for the CRT
[This message was edited by Bill Crook on 07 July 2001 at 01:17 PM.]

I don't like the heat that regular CRT monitors generate. The Forum computer and router keep this room pretty toasty as it is.
I'm looking seriously at the flatscreens now that the've come down in price. I need more than 15", 1024x768 too. When the 17" ones get down to about $800, I'll probably get one.

b0b...
While understanding that CRT's do generate a bit of heat,it has been my observation that LCD screens (over a period of time, lets say,in general,2 to 3 years) have a good tendency to loose a good bit of brightness, contrast, and over-all color. Thats one of the reasons I haven't given a lot of thought to LCD or plasma-screen devices. Besides that,(NMHO)they arn't as good as CRT's for office work. In general,I think that CRT's have a longer usuable life-span than the LCD's. Where you don't need to look at it for a 9 to 5 job,LCD's are O.K.
I'm sure that a LCD would work great for your server applications, but as a day to day screen, I don't think we are there just yet. All in all,for me,the CRT's are the way to go.
Geoff....
Sorry man, I don't know of a best way to clean one. My idea would be to wipe it with a soft, clean, damp cloth only.
