Won't save password-Help...

My wife had to re-install everything on my sister-in-laws computer. Now it won't save the password when using the dial-up-network. It's a Compac Presario I don't know if it's 95 or 98. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I can't provide more information, but they're 120 miles away.

I tried it, but it didn't work. The password still doesn't show up.
I found out it's Win95, if that makes any difference.
Any additional things to try would be appreciated. Image

Ernie, within the Dial Up Networking Connection (DUN) there is a place for user name and password. Check that.

To acces the Dialup Network, open My Computer and the open the Dial up Networking Folder. In there will the be DUN for her internet connection. RIGHT click on the DUN icon and then LEFT click on properties. This will bring up another panel. Click on the Security tab at top and then enter the user name and password in there and then click OK or apply or whatever it says (I forgot) to save the entered data.

Ernie-- From your description, it is unclear whether you mean 1 Image the password does not get saved and must be re-entered each time, or 2 Image the password is there but the dial-up module still asks for the user name/password be typed in.

These would be different problems with different solutions. If the problem still exists, post a little more info. --Everett

Everett;
From what I understand, when you call up the dial-up/log-on box, (to connect to the server) the password isn't there. The user name is though. The box that normally can be checked to save the password is shaded over and you can't click it.
It's hard to describe it, as I'm 120 miles from the computer and the problem is being explained to me by my wife over the phone.

Ernie,

If none of that works, try this.

Rightclick on network neighborhood, go to properties.
Click on the Identification tab.
Make the username, the same as your dialup networking user name. I.E, your account name with your ISP. Save changes, and reboot.

Windows 95/98 has this quirk, that it will grey out that checkbox for saving the password. Setting the identification name, to the dialup account name, makes it 'clickable' again. There is no other fix that I know of, except this, if this is the symptem you have (greyed out checkbox for saving the password)

It doesnt do this on a new install of windows, but sometimes that happens, and you have to change that name, to make it work.

Ernie--The 'save password' may be disabled (greyed out) for any of several reasons.

If, when starting Windows, you get a prompt to enter a password but hit 'cancel', Windows will start up but will not use the password cache. If, a password WAS entered at the Windows startup prompt, the password cache may be corrupted.

Check the Windows folder for a file(s) with a .pwl extension. (You might have Rna.pwl, and one or more with a user name in place of the 'Rna'. Rename the file(s) and change the 'pwl' to 'opw' or something that makes sense to you as an OLD password list. Then restart Windows and, if prompted for a password at startup, key in your normal password. If you don't want to have to log on to Windows, key in a blank password.

Also, for DialUpNetworking to enable passwords, you must have the Client for Microsoft (or Netware) Networks installed. Check ControlPanel/Network to see what's there.

Along with reinstalling DUN, these are the easy things to try. If they don't work, there are some Registry entries that may need to be changed. Usually, though, your problem is caused by an incorrect logon or a corrupt .pwl file. Post again or email me if you want more details.

If the check-box option to save password is grayed out, go to your network properties and add client for microsoft network. You may have to reboot, but then the check-box option will be available.
