data transfer hd - hd

Post by Kenny Yates »

I just got my wife a new computer for mothers Day and I want to transfer a bunch of the programs from the old computer which run on windows 95, i's an old 133. Naturally my zip drive won't make connection with the old computer for some reason, Murphy's law I think. Anyone know a reasonably inexpensive and relative easy way of doing this, maybe like a parallel ort to parallel port or something along that order.

Thanks Ken

You can buy a "null" modem cable and run from serial port to serial port. You will also need a program to do this.

Or, you can temporarily hook up the old computers HD in the new PC (as a slave drive) and then copy the files. This may sound like a hassle but it's relatively easy. If the new computer doesn't have cables and power for an additional device you could use the cables from the CD Rom for the temporary connection.

Thanks Jack, I was hoping I wouldn't have to switch drives etc, but I may have to. You don't happen to offhand know the names of the transfer programs, do you, I already have the cables from and old program, shich I can't remember the name of. As BE says, I guess I'm having a senior moment or senior week in my case.

Kenney-- You have DirectCableConnection on both computers now. It is part of Windows but you may have to install it.

With DCC, you can set up a computer/computer connection using either the serial or parallel port. Each requires a special cable.
'Null modem' for serial or a 'LapLink' type for parallel.

Setup is very easy. Check your Windows HELP file for 'direct cable connection'. --Everett

I use Laplink all the time to do this. It comes with easy to use software and cables.
