Windows Standby Mode

Post by Joe Delaronde »

My ATI Radeon manual tells me to put the computer in "Stand by Mode" because there must be no background programs running while capturing video from a tape source.
What does this do and what does it shut down?
If I err and go on the net in this mode am I in danger of the unforseen?
Thanks Joe

They must mean something different. If you put your machine in "standby" mode to me that means it is in "sleep" or as Windows ME calls it "hibernation" mode. If you are in those modes nothing will work.

I suspect they mean something to the effect you don't want other programs running at the same time the video capture is running. Sort of like shutting things down when you do a CD burn. When I do a CD burn I disable my screen saver, antivirus and disable the internet through my firewall - which are the only programs on my machine that are normally running (start with windows startup) that have potential for interruption of the burn and cause glitches or noise clicks in the burn.

. . and instead of pushing 'Control, Alt, Delete' over and over and over again, here is a place from which you can download 'End-It-All', which is a small program that closes everything except Explorer and Systray - http://newlife-win98.server101.com/enditall_info.htm
Jack, if you don't already have a program like this you may find this handy for when you're burning your CD's.

There is a standby mode in the Start/Shutdown window in windows 98. I put the computer in standby and can still work on the net, email, etc. What gives? Can't find a satifactory explanation of "standby mode"

That looks like a handy program. But I don't have that much running, at startup, other than absolute "must have" programs. Compared to their sample, the only thing that it would really do for me is shut down Norton Antivirus and that is only a mouse click to shut down.

Many people load a lot of unnecessary stuff at windows startup and for them it would be handy. e.g. programs such as Winamp, RealPlayer, AOL (or whatever ISP), Instant messenger type programs, etc do not need to be loaded at startup but many programs want to put a startup item in the registry and have the icon on the sys tray.

Bill -
I use it anytime I install new software, but frequently I use it before firing up 'Band-In-A-Box' or its companion sequencer/recorder 'Power Tracks', or any other music performance software that I've been 'putzing around' with lately.

By not having other programs running 'in the background' this assures minimal or no 'gliches or hiccups' in the music recording/playback.

As well as you play it's my pleasure to be on the stand with you and I'm looking forward to next year.
