Does anyone use a TV Card in your computer?

Post by Ben Wittke »

I would like to play my PSG Videos thru my computer and also record some audio right off the videos into my hard drive. I have my guitar right next to the computer and am using instructional tapes. How is the quality with the TV cards out there, and which one do you think is better?

Hi Ben -- I'm using an ATI 'All-In-Wonder' card. It's a video accelerator with TV in/out based on the RAGE 128 chip. The card was bundled with adapters to connect a TV, VCR, Camcorder, etc and software to do an adequate job of editing.

As this card is now about 3 years old, ATI and others probably have better stuff currently available. Things work well enough but be prepared for VERY large files if you attempt to copy a tape to your hard drive. If you merely wish to watch the tape on your computer monitor, no problem.

The quality of playback will be determined by several things: CPU speed, RAM, monitor, and general machine efficiency. If you have a newer computer, the tape quality will be mostly affected by the limitations of the VCR. Video tape usually is not too great for audio or slow playback.

Check eBay for the ATI and other cards.
