Java Again

Post by Joe Delaronde »

I still can't see some pics on the internet.
They are Java applets.
I have done this;
Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Java VM
Here it shows 3 selections which are with a check mark.
I have re-booted, and no pics.
using Explorer with all updates.

I have the defaults selected for the Advanced. I have I.E. 5.5

Sometimes I will go to a page and it will have a Java applet and I'll see Java applet starting but nothing ever comes up or I may see one with a "red x". I think these are a result of problems at the originating web site not my problems.

My ISP's home page has one that comes up sometimes and somtimes it doesn't. It appears the Java applet is actually run from a different (remote) server.

While the problem might be a faulty applet, your security level setting (in the options panel)for java applets may be set higher than required to run the applet.

To change the setting go to the security tab in options and click on the custom level button. Then scroll down to Java VM and select the level of permission to run Java applets that you desire.

Caution should be exercised when reducing security settings to prevent possible problems with "malicious" applets.

Jack
Can you you display whatis on the following site. It is a chord study site. http://web1.hamilton.edu/javamusic/ChordDrills.html
I can't. Just get an empty box with a little square box in the upper left corner which has a little red square, a blue ball & a blue triangle inside of it.

John....I changed the security to medium, re-booted & no better.

I just tried it and it worked OK for me.
My security settings are set farily high so I don't think it's a security problem.

What version of Windows and Internet Explorer do you have?

I'm running Win95c with Explorer 4.01SP2 and have no problem with the chord drill site.

My security is also set to medium, java console enabled.

Excuse the stupid question, but you DO have your browser's multimedia settings 'ON', right???

Can't think of anything else, just now. --Ev

Hello Joe,

I can access the chord site using IE 5.0 and Netscape 4.7. With IE I only have the JIT setting checked.

I am Sun's Java Engineering Program Manager (and novice steel player). If I get a chance I'll talk with some of my engineers and see if they have any hints.

David, Thanks, I would appreciate that. I just don't know what to do other than delete the windows 98 and re-install it. What will I lose?????? Would I have to re-install all my programs if I do this?
What is this Java thing? A program? Maybe it's not installed or something? How can I be sure??

Java is a programming language that is used to write programs called "applets" that your web browser runs. You need to have a Java "virtual machine" (VM) installed. This is usually installed with your operating system or with your browser. To see if it's installed click on "Start" then "Control Panel" then double-click on "Add/Remove Programs". If Java is installed you will see either "JRE" or "Java Runtime Environment" in the list.

Joe, sorry I didn't get back to you last night - you must have stayed up later than I did!

Reinstalling your browswer should reinstall Java. If not, you may have to reinstall from your Windows disk. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks a meg for you help. I got the problem resolved. David, I checked to see if Java was installed, and to my surprise it was not.
I clicked on START, WINDOWS UPGRADE, and downloaded & installed Vertual Machine (VM).
Works and everything looks so different.
Thanks again.
Now if I can get help with my sound, but that is another thread.

Bob, please except my sincere thanks for your efforts and time spent running this wonderfull site.
Another happy formite. You may close this topic.
