Just send it as an attachment.
Use the little paper-clip thingy.
Works well for me.

I just sent you a "wav" file.

There is a way to embed a sound file into the e-mail message and when the user opens the message it will start to play. I don't know how to do it, but to me it's a little tacky.

Bill, thanks! Yes, I could send it as an attachement I know, but for that specific case I need something a little bit more "tacky", as Jack puts it

JD, that's just my personal opinion. I don't like E-mails that have large files attached to them or something embedded that I "must" look at or listen to. If someone wants to send me something with a link, that I can look or listen at my leisure or option then that's fine. But I don't like someone sending me megabit files, unless it's something I ask for, as it still takes a while to receive even with a 56K dialup modem.

To add to that thought, I hate going to a website that automatically opens a sound program on my computer--I feel hacked. (I probably could disable this on my browser (IE5)).

As to do-ability, J-D, are you sure this is an available feature? I just browsed the help file of my OE5 and found the ability to embed photos, and attach sound files but nothing about embedding sound.

Well, one way I think it can be done is to send the message as a web page, which, as I receive messages like that from lager companies (advertising), seems possible...

A short statement but involves a lot of stuff and maby even a tad of programming throwed in too.

Sorry there, JD, I have no idea how to do a web-page type set-up to make a wav file play upon openimg of a e-mail. I'm not too sure that some anti-virus (sp?) programs wouldn't see this as an attempt to attack the system. Web-page stuff behave far different than a simple e-mail message. any e-mail message that attempts to make a call to the hard drive or a specfic memory address(say,like to call the sound function) without a proper call function identifier, could even shut down or lock up the computer. Not a nice or well behaved thing to happen.

I'm not trying to discourage you here, JD but most of us don't expect a e-mail message to call a function unless we tell it to by clicking on the attachment icon or something. I am sure it can be done tho, so don't let my thoughts here keep you from trying.

If you do find out how, I sure others of us would like to know too. It may be just as simple as embedding a url address like we do here to post photos. Lets hope it' that's easy.

After a bit of on-line talks with MS folks, What you want to do is exactly what IE5.0 Outlook Express is designed NOT to do.

Eventho some hackers will tell you different, IE5.0 tries to act as a firewall to prevent embedding html code into a e-mail message. (Yes, I know it failed very badly in a couple of cases.)

Just thought you would like to know that according to them, Us normal people, (read this as non-hackers) should have a hard time embedding html code in a e-mail message.

I tried it and it works. As you know, most wave files are pretty large so it tends to be a pretty big bundle you are sending.

Jon, what version of Outlook are you using. All I see in Format - Background is picture and color. My version of Microsoft Outlook 98 under Windows 2000 is 8.5.6204.0

Jim--this is Outlook Express 5

--specifically, 5.00.2919.6600.

The Windows title bar up top says Outlook Express provided by MSN (my ISP and the source of my IE5 CD. I just upgraded from IE4 last week. The IE5 is 5.00.2919.6307CO).
I'm running Win95.
Could this MSN version have some fancy tweaks?

Oops, you're right. I only use Outlook Express for reading the newsgroups. My Outlook Express version is 5.50.4133.2400 and it DOES have the sound option.

BTW, the ONLY way to get OE 5.5 is to get the IE 5.01 sp2, then get IE 5.5. If you jump straight to IE 5.5, you WON'T get OE 5.5. That's Microsloth for ya!

I did it very easily. Works great !!!

All this gives new meaning to the great people here on the forumn.

I bet we will begin to hear a lot more sound in our e-mail messages now.

I wonder ......
If this method could be used to add sound clips to the tab section of this forumn????

Yeah, I just did the upgrade tonite and to my surprise, I got it installed without my computer being trashed and here's what really made my day, IT WORKS! Things really seem to go better every time Microsoft gets under pressure... don't they...

While it is not my business: Yeah as Jack said, please don't! It clogs up the whole page and therefor drags down the load up process. We've had it... Then, there are those that don't have the right player installed and get messages they don't really know what to do with or why they got'em... J-D.
