Yep, I loved Toto. They were all monsters. I think that, if you were ever in a band like that, you would just have to retire afterwards- nothing else would ever measure up!
My girls still think "Africa" is about the best song ever.
[This message was edited by Rick McDuffie on 28 March 2006 at 09:32 AM.]

I was playing a solo gig one night last year (with about 10 people in the crowd), when Steve Lukather (Toto guitarist) strolled in and parked himself right in front to me for the whole set. When I was finished, we talked for a while and it turned out he had married a girl from my town and was visiting for a week. We ended up hanging out a few times and he told me some jaw-dropping stories about jamming in Jeff Lynne's living room with Dylan, singing She Loves You with Paul McCartney, meditating with George Harrison, etc. We still stay in touch on email....very humble, down to earth guy who happens to be a tremendous guitar player.
Not all of Toto's stuff is my bag, but the talent cannot be denied.

I was always slightly annoyed that Toto were a cool band to hate. Thank Rolling Stone magazine's loser critics for that. There are several bands from the 70's and 80's that music critics made cool to hate: Toto, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Styx, Foreigner, Bee Gees....and on and on.
Every time someone says they don't like one of these bands, a red flag goes up for me. I always think, "review reader....letting critics rule their taste."
When I was talking with Lukather, he addressed this topic. He said that a critic once stated that Lukather's parents should have been sterilized. These guys are well aware of this stuff. They're just too busy selling out arenas in Europe to care. When we were sitting at the bar, the bartender overheard us talking about Toto, and he said, "Toto! They suck, man!" And Lukather laughed and said he played with them. The bartender replied, "Wow, too bad!" Lukather shrugged it off and later left him a sizable tip anyway. That's just the type of guy he seems to be....very humble but a little mystified at the bad press thing, which has infiltrated the minds of so many people who can't think for themselves.

Didn't they sweep the Grammys back in 1984 or so?
We should all suck that bad.
As for the comment from the bartender, ever notice that the most critical and vocal people out there on a subject seem to be the ones who are the least capable at actually doing what they're talking about?
Case in point: Go to any sports bar. Listen to all of the guys watching a basketball game talk about how bad some player was, and that he couldn't shoot for crap. Then walk in the men's room. Look at all of the paper towels on the floor. These same guys can't even hit the wastebasket.
I used to be pretty vocal about my musical tastes when I was younger. These days I'm a little less critical when I don't like something and a little more open, too.
I also agree with the comment about selling out arenas in Europe. Add every other country in the world to that, too. The world is a lot bigger place than America, my friends.

Yes, Artie, good point. Many bands that no longer tour the USA still continue to sell out around the world. Toto are far from retired. They're busy as a band and with solo projects, and they've done a lot of touring overseas in the past few years. They also play in America from time to time, although I think they're most celebrated in Europe and Japan.
Check out Steve Lukather.com.......very interesting articles and information on a guy who has seen it all and more.

And it was a crying shame and a great loss,
when drummer Jeff Porcaro died from a accidental spraying by bugger killer he seemed to be VERY alergic too.
Super player, very tastefull and yet huge chops.
His brother Steve is/ was the keyboard player for Toto.
I won't say they were my favorite band back then, but some of their songs are on my list of favorites from that time.
Another band Iliked was Mr. Mr.,
same critical crap but I listen to them occasionally still.
Styx had some great arrangments on some albums.
I always loved Journeys lead singer,
one of the best tenor voices ever in rock.
There is an old saying :
Those can, do,
those that can't, teach.
But I saw a great paraphrase.
This that can play, do,
Those that can't... review for Rolling Stone!

Many engineers have a "mix Cd" they use, with songs they know and appreciate various recorded elements of, to play on the monitor systems in new studios they work at to "tune" their ears to the characteristics of the new room. "Rosanna" is the first track on mine. I love the mix and quality of the recording. I really don't care what critics of any stripe think, I like Toto.

On my reference disk is typically :
Gloria Estefan's
Mi Tiarra
and the next cut with those great nylon guitars.
Mister Mister
Welcome To The Real World
and / or Kiria
Jerry Garcia and David Grissman's
last bluegrass effort
A section of Caramin Burana
Loggins Messina
House At Pooh Corner, and Angry Eyes or Vahavela
Steely Dan Aja
and Don Fagin Walk Trough The Raindrops
Joe Jackson Another World from Night And Day
Lastly Mark O'Connor, Yo Yo Ma and Edgar Mayer
The Steven Foster cut with James Tayler
If they all sound cool to me, I like the room
Rossana would also be a good addition.

Well said, ArtieWe should all suck that bad.
I learned pretty early on that just because I didn't like it, that didn't mean it was crap.
There's only three type of music I've haven't learned to appreciate:
Opera
Big Band Swing
Rap
Verdi and Glenn Miller have awesome chops. Rap has a certain attitude I can't get my head around. Gotta good beat, I guess.
I was never a huge fan of Toto, though I could appreciate their musicianship. Africa is a killer song.

It would appear that they sucked so bad that Miles Davis covered their tunes. From Steve L.'s website:
Recently IMC Music released a 3 cd pack with the complete Munich Concert of Miles Davis & band from July 1988. On the setlist two Toto songs: Human nature (Steve Porcaro) and Don't stop me now (David Paich & Steve Lukather). Check out the info and soundclip at the sessions section. Also take a look at the updated covers section.
