Nashville Star..just an observation
Although I only watched the re-run today..I have to take something back..
Wynonna is a pretty good host.
Actually she is the best part of the show in my opinion ..
Now don't get on my case for the following..
I'm just the messenger...
I found it odd that judges Big and Rich beat up a fine singing gal and told her
"She was Not Country" ..
Then the Gal judge, Anastaia something or other ( who is the Wife of a producer) joined them on the You're not Country
bandwagon..
Phil Vassar didn't bite.. he told her she was a great vocalist..
Wynonna told her not to let anyone tell her who she is ..then looked over at the Judges with a slight frown...
I thought the gal singer, can't remember her name, was maybe the best female contestant singer this show had ever put on the stage...
I just found it a bit odd that Big and Rich, who I personally feel are a bit over the edge from Country Music would tell someone else, and quite matter of factly, that they were NOT Country...

They may be big,and surely rich, but they are sure as hell not country.Defend them all you want, but they and their peers and the [MU-SICK]industry are doing every thing in their power to literally destroy real country music. When these top twenty clowns are getting wealthy with this absolute &%#* they are pumping out and a real artist like DALE WATSON is ostracized,go figure.LUDICROUS!!!!!

Anastacia esentially told that gal from Napa, that sang Cowboy's Sweatheart, that the contest was "Nashville" and had nothing to do with country music.
Needless to say, I promptly went to my computer and voted for her. First time I've EVER voted for anyone on any of these modern day Star Search shows.

B&R's music is made to be played thru a "club" soundsystem with about 100,000 watts of bass and twenty four 15 Inch speakers making the walls rattle and your brain shake. I always wondered about "Ride a Cowboy" until I heard it in this setting.
The service conditions of today's club sound system speakers would have blown the cones of my 1976 15" Altecs right out onto the dance floor.
It ain't Kitty Wells' or Faron Young's music, that's for sure.

Well, I swore I wasn't going to comment on this show. I never watch talent shows in general but one of the contestants has been a regular performer on our Grapevine Opry show (I've been in the house band for 14 years) in Texas for several years and I wanted to vote in support of him.
IMO, Nashville Star just confirmed why I don't watch talent shows. Loud and flashy sells, to the exclusion of anything else. Not to say that one can't be high-energy and be musical, but it's not common in younger performers. From the hyperkinetic lighting cues to the editing to the screaming audience, the show is desperately appealing to the 18-34 demographic that apparently wants country music to be watered down 70s rock. Fine, I can accept that.
But it was stunning to see the apparent musical ignorance of the judges. As most of you did, I caught the hypocrisy of John Rich flaming a performer for not being country enough. This, right after Big Kenny had earlier told one singer he believed there should be no stylistic boundaries in country music. Well, which is it? You can't have it both ways. Perhaps he means there should be no boundaries as long as it doesn't sound like what has come before.
As for the musical qualifications of WhatsHerName, well, she is gorgeous, isn't she?
I thought the comment about yodeling showed ignorance in the extreme. You'll notice that Wynonna slapped her down immediately afterwards by subtly acknowledging to the singer that it was a great Patsy Montana song. Unfortunately, Wynonna (who has actual musical talent) doesn't get to vote. And I doubt the lady who did has ever heard of Patsy Montana.
I wouldn't watch any of the remaining shows but, as I said, I want to support my friend, who knows and loves real country music and has told me on more than one occasion that steel guitar is his favorite instrument. But no matter who wins I hope it's one of the good singers instead of someone who just puts on a good show. Such as the poor shoeless dude who said people come to "see" a concert, not to "listen" to a concert. I fear he may go far.

Jeff,
Tell all the guys at the Grapevine Opry hi for me. I got to meet them all when my brother (Chip Horner) was killed in a car accident. He was the steel man for quite awhile for them. All the boys in the band did some very nice things for our family during that time and I will never forget each one of them.

Jerry, good to hear from you. I think we might have met at Chip's funeral service. He was a fabulous player and is still missed and remembered by all the folks at the GVO. I used to fill in for Chip at the Opry and after his tragic death Rocky asked me to play full time. I left Johnnie High's show in Arlington and have been in Grapevine ever since.
Please give our warmest regards to your family.

I tried to watch last night, and lasted for about five minutes....
It's crass, flashy and shallow.
Who was it that said: "You'll never lose money by under-estimating your audience...."?
Every time I watch television, it seems to have sunk even lower. The Golf Channel is nearly unwatchable ('though I'm very interested in the sport) because of the rock-music sound-track that accompanies everything, as well as all the high-tech graphics as they compete for our attention. Noise doesn't sell to me - it puts me off.
When you take away all the drivel on our cable service, we're only left with TCM and Animal Planet!

What got to me was when the Bimbo judge who got on the case of the gal who sang "I wanna be a cowboy's sweetheart" complete with yodel, and told her "This is Nashville." I guess she's too young to know that that WAS the Nashville whose history she's too young to know. Not only was the song a million seller, but it was the first million seller by a female singer. Wynonna, on the other hand, made a coment that the gal sang a SHE-RO song by Patsy Montana, cause Wynonna knows the history. I agree that it was pretty stupid to say that the other gal wasn't country. That was the pot callin' the kettle black. I do not watch American Idol because I can't stand Simon's mouth. I think Nashville Star gets it's point across with class and compassion. I know, it's TV, still.....Simon Sucks!

Dayna, we think alike and why not me being a Sacramento raised right off the old Fair grounds off Stockton Blvd. X street to be exact until we moved to N.Sac. I don't watch the Idol either not totally because of Simon. mainly its the judges opinion never seems to match mine. I hate yelling and screaming and they hate ballards. This Nashville star has some good singing if only they would empasis Country Music. Anastatia and Simon would make a lovely couple. Remember the Yolo County playhouse?
