Clearing your throat

Post by Steve Hackney »

Anyone have a good solution to clearing your throat before singing.
Sometimes this time of year especially the old sinuses do their draining thing (snot throat) and it makes it hard to sing.

Next best and acceptable for church use are
"Fisherman's Friend" throat lozenges. If you've never tried them, they are really strong.

My brother uses this throat spray he got a a health food store called
"Singers saving Grace" Extra strong , It has some Liquorish(spelling?) root in it

He was sick and could barley sing . This helped out alot and got him through the gig.

Now he doesn't leave home without it.
Hope that helps-Dave

A voice coach told us to clear your throat by saying "HOO" real loud. High pitched, sort of like an owl. That is supposed to be open the throat and be easier on it than the normal coughing type of throat clearing we all do.
I also use the throat spray when needed, and usually bring Throat Coat herbal tea on stage in a travel cup.
Caffeine, alcohol and cold drinks all make the throat tighten up.
And I set up with 2 small fans on the floor to blow the smoke in the other direction.
We've tried to all do vocal warmups before each show and that really does help.....
Interesting timing of a topic, because I've been fighting a cold the last few days, and can barely talk today. Hope I can sing by Thursday....

Steve, the spray is called "Musician's Secret", or "Singer's Secret", or something like that. Not sure where to get it, the vocal coach gave it to us, but I'll find out this weekend for sure.
I get the tea at Whole Foods, but any natural food type store ought to have it....

Have had bad postnasal drip, needing constant throat-clearing for over a year. Just bought some Singers' Saving Grace at a health food store. Will report back in a few days.

The GLEE CLUB used to utilize LEMON Slices to give them that clear throat. Bite into and suck out the juice.

Once you have it cleared (using the many varities above) and you still have that sinus drip in your throat, try Mucinex DM. It almost dries you too much (very strong), but works to keep that ugly stuff from destroying the vocals. Lots of water helps keep it moisterized once clear.

If sore or raspy, using pure honey or honey with cinnamon is good as well. Warming up really good certainly is a must.

Other than that...find the cure for the common cold and pollen problems. That would be nice.

After using it for a few days now, I can say that Singer's Saving Grace did nothing for my postnasal drip. It tastes kind of interesting (herbal) but, no, it didn't help me. Of course, Your Mileage May Vary.
