You Bigsby fans will get a kick out of this. It’s on eBay now. I have nothing to do with this auction… I wish I did! Before you get your checkbook out… the opening bid is $330,000 !! I wonder how he came up with that number?

--Well, the Sept. issue of Vintage Guit. Rag (w/Brian Setzer on cover) lists in "price guide" a 1951 Bigsby solid body as having a value of betw. 20-24 thou.$$--(depending on condition) -a conservative guess, I imagine. I don't see any bidders falling over themselves to get this one,--unless they live in a certain West African nation...maybe this guy wants to move out to the hot So. Cal. real estate frenzy and n
eeds a down payment(!)
Sure am a sucker for that birdseye--Bigsby was masterful, a true artisan of functional forms; wonder why more copies of these aren't out in general usage. Seller has a mainline buisness of aquarium pumps(?)--My impression is --he considers himself the biggest piranha in the coy pond.
I agree. He's wasting his time listing it at that price. According to the current VGMag price guide it's worth 18K to 25K in excellent cond. This one is probably worth a bit more because it's mint and has documentation. I wonder how it plays?
[This message was edited by Doug Beaumier on 26 July 2005 at 09:25 AM.]

Some of you may recall the double neck guitar/mando that was made by Bigsby for Grady Martin-It has been featured on the cover of Vintage Guitar Magazine and was formerly part of the Chinery Collection-Well before the late Scott Chinery got it I was contacted by Mr.George Gruhn (the seller) and offered the guitar-the price then was $62,500 That was the highest price I had ever heard of on a Bigsby made instrument-until this one!
How much you wanna bet he gets an email from somebody offering to pay for it with a third party check in the amount of $96,700, and all he has to do is mail him the guitar and a check for the balance due...
I can't remember whether it was Joe Maphis or Merle Travis, but one of them mentioned in an interview that his Bigsby guitar looked a lot better than it played.
A-ha, finally pictures of the "Luke-guitar", I wonder who he was. This was one of the mystery guitars among the Bigsby instruments until now. Despite of the mint condition I don't think any guitar, except the ones with serious celebrity factor, will bring that much. Even the tear drop D'Angelico in time when Scott Chinery bought it was considerably less ( and that one sold through Mandolin Bros ) In any case, I'm glad to see this guitar surface for history's sake.
