Jim Croce
I just bought my mom a dvd of Jim Croce and watched it with her today. What a true musician and entertainer. The whole disk is various tv tapings of his tunes played live with just him and his sidekick on acoustic guitars. Together they sound like an entire band. Forgot the guy's name (he's only introduced once and there are no credits in the literature), but he plays some nice blues guitar and even does some pedal steel simulations on one tune - bending whole tones on an acoustic... Must be why he switches between 2 guitars. I highly recommend this dvd for those who lament today's canned live music. The only downside is I Got A Name is not on it. Would hate to think it was because he didn't write it.

Be sure to listen to the comentary track at least once. It broke my heart to learn that even when Jim was touring with number one hits, (that he wrote!), he was so low on cash he and Maury had to shop in Goodwill Stores, and share shirts.

Saw the remark about suing reccord companies.
I was talking to a friend of mine about this problem. In the past he was head of some of the largest record companies here in Nashville. You may remember when Dan Ragher asked the Dixie Chicks if they were millionaires. They replied that they were not etc. Soon after that interview they confronted the main office about this. I really don't know what happened. I asked my friend, why do musicians have to sue their record labels. His reply was that this is the way that this is done. He also said that the musician will only get what he is entitled to and no more.
Jim Croce, what a talant.

I saw Jim Croce live just before he died at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. I really wasn't looking forward to it since at that time I was a real purist and I viewed Croce as a commercial hack, who didn't deserve to share the stage with folks like John Prine and Steve Goodman.
Boy was I wrong. He was amazing, and completely different than I was expecting. He did one song, which I'm sure he never recorded since the lyrics were slightly blue which I've always called The Rooster Came Into the Yard. That immediately went into my repetroire and I've been singing it for 33 years.

Back when I used to try to sing with bands I did "Rapid Roy the Stockcar Boy" which was a cool tune. I'd like to see some of Jim's tunes on rhythm tracks to play along with. He had some nice melodies which could stand on their own without lyrics...JH in Va.
