New Country Classics ????????????

Post by Eddie Malray »

Greetings all: I was wondering if anyone can name a song that has been recorded and had a lot of air time within the last 5 years or so that will become a "Country Classic" and be played and sung by the next generations? I can't think of one myself. There have been a lot of great songs but I con't think they will stand the test of time as did songs like Your Cheating Heart, Crazy, Today I Started Loving You Again, and many others that most older musicians still add to their set list. Just Wondering-----Eddie

Eddie,

Thanks for your statement! I have been wondering myself often, my answer is: There are no songs that fall into that category!

I cannot think of one song that will live through the ages, like the Han Williams classics, or the classics written by Haggard, Owens, Tillis, Nelson or the professional writers of the past like Harlan Howard, Cindy Walker, Dallas Frazier etc.

Ask yourself a simple question: How many of today's songs can you hum and repeat after one listen? A lot of today's songs are constructed, overfilled with chords and melodies that simply won't stay in your ear.

Lloyd Green made an interesting comment a little while ago that these new songs don't fit to be played as instrumentals because nothing is left of the song once the words are taken away...

Kind Regards, Walter

Surely Alan Jackson would be responsible for at least a couple....

Not really sure because I've only started listening to the 'new country' within the last year. But, I would think that Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, and maybe George Strait might have a couple.

Aw, you mean "Save A Horse, Ride..." ain't gonna be in one of them big thick "classic country" guitar/song books on the shelf next to the "Van Halen" songbooks in 20 years?. Image

Instead of 5 years i would say 10 years.

"Look At Us" would have a chance.

"Hey Good Looking" Jimmy Buffet, oh wait, ummm... You'd be amazed at how many people my age (mid 20's) have no idea that song is is an old Hank Sr. tune.

Speaking of amazed, "Amazed," by Lonestar may survive (probably more than 5 years old). I sure hope more than a few of Paisley's make it, they should. Unfortunately, some of Toby Keith's cheesy stuff will too.

Ron: I agree. I think "Look At Us" has a good chance. Ben: I don't think Toby Keith will last another five years. Just my thinking.

I really don't think we can even speculate about what will become future classics, tho we do.

Our classics were made when we were young and full of fire and I'm sure we never thought of them being classics at the time.

Yet now, being older and (wiser?) we look back at the days of our youth and with hindsight can pick out the classics.

I think in 20 or 30 years todays country youth will pick their own classic songs to add to ours. Their pick may suprise us.

Similar to the automobile ad: This is not your fathers country music.

People tend to fixate on the music from their adolescence and early twenties, and see before and everything after as dreck. Frank Sinatra -> Elvis -> Mick Jagger -> Marilyn Manson, who's really the hottest? I still get chills from the "dee-doo-doo-dee-dee-dee" section of "Freebird", though my new medication is helping with that....
