Paradise" by John Prine

Do any of you remember this song that was recorded back in the '60's. The Peabody Coal Shovel mentioned in the song was a Bucyrus-Erie 3850-B. I actually got to see that shovel operate when I was 12 years old.

The old 3850-B no longer exists, and it was buried at the Sinclair Coal Mine back sometime around 1990. The Shovel was in operation from 1963 till 1988.[This message was edited by Nick Reed on 25 April 2004 at 07:07 AM.]

The Everly Brothers did a fine version of this fascinating song - think it's on either 'Pass The Chicken and Listen' or 'Stories We Could Tell'.

I was working in Evansville IN a few years ago and took a drive through Western Kentucky on my day off. Ended up in Muehlenburg County so explored the area. There was a big shovel visible, don't know if it was working. As it turns out, the millwrights who were working with me were mostly from Muehlenburg county. Great bunch of people. Saw the Green River also. Paradise is a great song, I've done it in bluegrass and C&W electric bands. It's always a hit.

Donna yes he did.
I played that with a band last year, very funny song.

I also do "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore".
I take a short break that he didn't write, and do a pick along the bass string sliding down (GGRRRrrrrraaa) as I say "GOING DOWN",
for the one way elavator to the underworld, and continue with the last chorus.

I played a Prine song on my very 1st public performance.

And played Paradise last week for some one.
A lovely poignant song of lost inocence,
and that you can never go back home...
it ain't thar no mo..

I recently saw John Prine in Billy Bob Thorton's movie "Daddy and Them".

He fit his part so perfect it didn't look like he was acting.

The movie has great sountrack, with lots of Steel by the late/great Gary Hogue. Marty Stuart produced the music and does a lot beautiful mandolin and guitar in it.

Funny, I got a call to go play at a medieval festival in Sommiere today.

After it was getting to general music, not just anceint, I was playing mandolin with a scottish fiddler in a 900 year old back alley cave, with crepes and mulled wine served by people in middle ages garb.

We played a bunch of reels and mazourkas and such.
But someone asked for an american country tune.

So I played Paradise.
And Columbus Stockade in Dm.
Both went over very well too.

And I was jamming with a guy who played A Vielle / Hurdy Gurdy like Sting played on the grammys.

Yes, In Spite of Ourselves is a great album, and to me it is , along with Buddy Miller`s Your Love and Other Lies a reminder of how good a steel player Al Perkins is! Touch , tone and phrasing , all top notch.

We do it with guitar, hi strung guitar and dobro, 3 part Hominy!
