I can really hear pitch correction on Terri Clark, Jo Dee Messina and Tim McGraw. It's not that the notes are too perfect, it's how they get from one note to another in an instantaneous way. Pavarotti can't even sing like that.

I've heard that, now, you can buy a microphone,w/ "pitch-correcter" built right into it. No external rack-mount needed.

In the engineer's (and producer's) desire for (artifical) perfection, I imagine it's done with quite a few artists, both on recordings, and in live performances. Problem is..."perfection" becomes pretty boring pretty fast, especially when you <u>know</u> you're listening to a phoney. Image

There hasn't been any current country music on the radio in the NYC for a year or 2 but as of a couple years ago it sounded like allmost everything was being run through the Antares McSinger Machine. I swear I could hear it on a bunch of the single note instruments. It sounded crazy to me. I thought over compression sounded crappy but the abuse of the Antares really screws music up.

One thing I was wondering is how the hell are you supposed to play in tune on the steel along to a track that they are going to "correct" everybody else on after you leave ?

Belly Button: Remember musicianship?
Star Singer: Wha?
Belly Button: Before drum programming, MTV, CMTV, AutoTune, Synths...you know, hard hours in the practice room? The joy of actually achieving something?
Star: I work out during those hours! You must be joking!
Belly Button: Give me a break! You suck, and you are rich and famous!
Star: C'MERE, YOU!

(sound of toilet flush)

Belly Button, last heard while swirling down the drain: WHAT A WORLD! WHAT A WORLD!

Jim Phelps, is that mp3 clip really enriquei?
That is the most horrific thing I've ever heard, and I've recorded myself in the shower singing, so I KNOW bad....seriously, that is some bad stuff. I have also noticed quite a few "Antares" artifacts of the so-called 'singers' topping the charts. Sad, very sad. It's no wonder I can't listen to commercial radio any more.

There was a tape going around the studios in L.A.(and everywhere else I guess)of Linda McCartney's pre-Antares vocal monitor feed during a late 70s - early 80s Wings gig.It was ghastly. Poor Linda - a lovely lady but she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

Never heard one session without something
left or or right of center. It just don't happen.
The producers job is just to minimize or hide the less than perfect things and make it have life.

Most of our favorite albums are filled with mini clams, but the ones that stay are coupled to some thing wonderful and often something else makes it work.

Each player knows when he wanted something else to come out on notes 23 and 74.5.
But lives with what was played because notes 20-22, 24-30 and 74, 75-84 were lovely.

Some producers go that extra centimeter to perfection, often to little positive effect because the life is drained from the performance by repetition.

Doing something too long and too many times in the studio I call " Enterinmg The Land Of Diminishing Returns"<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 19 November 2003 at 01:43 AM.]</p></FONT>

Beyond intonation, my pet peave is singers who use such wide vibrato that pitch becomes a ballpark measurement. My personal biggest offenders: Joan Baez & Buffy Saint Marie. Yow! Who let the dogs out!?

This is from another thread, but because of the topic I thought it merits recycling: Would pitch-control help this?

How dangerous would it be to ask whether, on occasion (extremely RARE occasion, of course), established session steelers need to have a note or two pitch corrected?

I am now running for cover.
