Sinbad" o'conner Goes Country.
Yes it's true that bald head feminist from Saturday Night Live who thinks she can sing will be appearing on Dolly Parton's new CD due in late October. She does one heck of a job tearing up photos live on T.V. so I guess Dolly has a place for her on her new CD. It's called making money & sell, sell, sell.
I have one question for a Dolly, why not have Marilyn Mason for a live duet on stage at the Opry, and when Marilyn Manson feels he/she needs to pee, bingo he/she can do it live where all the greats in country music once stood. (Hey it's the "IN' thing to do, it's the 21 century, lighten up Ken, hey dude you need to be re-programed.)
Wonder why I don't go to Nashville or buy tickets for the new country acts or even buy CDs any more (except pedal steel CD's) or even support what today's music culture calls country music. Radio country is ban in my house & my car.
Guess I'm out of tune or just getting too old.
Time to wake up guys, it's all over, kiss it all good bye, money is the key, hats & bellys are in.
BUT........
Hank, Ray, Buck, Waylon, Connie they still rule in my house when it comes to country music.
Just my thoughts for today.

Sinead is actually a pretty fantastic singer and tends to create music that doesn't fit neatly in any category, except the category of music you won't purchase.
I don't think Sinead has any kind of status that's gonna pull in big bucks for Dolly. I'm guessing that if they're working together, a producer seems to think that they have a common thread somewhere, musically, or maybe there's just a mutual admiration. Y'know, some musicians just like to shake up their own world and try something different. We can all benefit by doing that.

Just to comment on one very specific aspect of Sinead O'Connor's career:
Her hairstyle was first adopted during a time before she was famous and financially secure, when her label wanted to package her in the standard way that attractive women are packaged in pop music. By shaving her head, she was in effect saying that she would not be sold in a way that had nothing to do with her art. I wonder how many of us would have the guts to make a stand like that, and possibly jeopardize our "big chance."
It's one thing to disagree with her point of view, or dislike her singing style, (I don't personally have any of her music), but it's pretty inaccurate to lump her in with performers who rely on their sexuality, or some other contrivance to sell records.

Ken Lang - do you mean those round circles on top of one's head, I just looked in the mirror, gee I got one of them with some kind of design inside, can it be a crop circle.
One more thing guys, back in the late 60's I was a big fan of "TINY TIM," who stayed out of Country music, stuck to tulip music, played a mean ukulele, effects & all. No, I don't know what the guy smoked at the time, maybe it was banana peels, seaweed, left over bean soup, New York City subway dust.......

What?!?!?!?when her label wanted to package her in the standard way that attractive women are packaged in pop music.
Nah.
Bullhockey! She shaved her head to get noticed! There's already "babes" all over the shelves...CD's are replete with them. But a "Baldy" babe? Hey, that's pretty kinky! Now THAT stands out! A hairless siren, no doubt! People want to be noticed. They want to be different, and so it's shaved heads, purple hair, tatoos, earrings (everywhere), hippo jeans (them Levi's that are big enough for 3 people, and have legs twice a long as they should be). Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
The world's full of people. If you don't have superior looks, talent, intellect, or tons of money---it's hard to stand out.
(That is, unless you look different!)
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 20 July 2003 at 12:37 PM.]

I can see how you may think that, since it's certainly a thought that would occur naturally to someone. I won't say that I am 100% certain you are incorrect, not knowing the people involved firsthand.Bullhockey! She shaved her head to get noticed!
All I can say is that if what you assume is true, (also based I'm sure on no first-hand knowledge of your own), the version I related of why she shaved her head is part of an elaborate scheme concocted by her label. I watched a documentary on her, and they showed earlier pictures of her, proposed publicity material, etc. Actually as I remember it, her iconoclastic vocal style is also -- at least in part -- a conscious renunciation; the motive of which logically fits with the rest of her artistic philosophy.
I certainly believe record companies are capable of elaborate scheming. (Why should governments have a monopoly on that?)
If that's what happened in this instance, they've gone to more than what might be the usual amount of trouble. You can believe what you like, Donny. It's not that important of a subject to me.
I don't remember exactly what her issue was with the Pope, but I do know she received a lot of hostility because of tearing his picture up on Saturday Night Live. If she ended up selling more records because of it, it was a pretty stressful way to go about it. I tend to think that, like her countyman Bono, she's just very politically inclined. Since that time, she has actually become an ordained priest in some offshoot of Catholicism.
For what it's worth, me head's pretty close to being shaved. It's low-maintenance, and darn comfortable.

Sinead was very good-looking with her hair, although I'd still go out with her the way she is.If you don't have superior looks, talent, intellect

I've heard enough of her music to contend that she also has more than the average amount of talent and intellect.
Maybe I should reconsider buying that next steel CD, and expand my horizons a bit. Hmmm...

Quite honestly, I have never really taken the time to listen to S.O..I never connected with the tunes I did hear so I moved on..like we all do.
Then she became political and I really just ignored her, pretty much like most folks. Had she been a big star, like the Chicks, she could have survived her fate with poor political behavior. But at the time she was a legend in her own mind.
And are you ready for this..yes Dolly is a wonderfull talent and stands strong for Country music..but I really don't care for her songs either..One or two here and there, but overall they are not my cup of tea. I have great respect for her and admire her..but I don't buy her CD's or go to her concerts, never did never will. I think she is a great actress though..
I think Dolly (todays Dolly) is aiming at an audience that is hyped to her career, which is not a bad thing.
Now S.O, hooking up with Dolly..I really don't get it..I think that if she was really trying to connect with the music she could have hooked up with another top female act that is really playing and producing main stream commercial Country music. You know, Steels, Fiddles, Brent Mason, Paul Franklin licks , all that stuff...
My feeling is she hooked up with Dolly to promote, or rather, re-promote her dead career by hooking up with Dolly's image..not her music.
At the end of the day, whatever it is she is doing will have to sell records or she will be right back to where she was before she hooked up with Dolly.
The basic formula hasn't changed for a hit record: Great song, great singer, great performance. Oh wait , they have added a few things...
The gals all have to look like Faith and the guys must have Tatoo's on their Mr. GQ muscles..and wear a big hat of course..
Does S.O. have a Tatoo and a Hat ? 'Cause I'm pretty certain she doesn't look like Faith...but I could be wrong...
happy monday

But then again, maybe she hooked up with Dolly because she likes her music (or vice versa - maybe Dolly asked her...)
The only S O'C music I have is on the Chieftains' Long Black Veil album - which I actually bought for the Ry Cooder and Mark Knopfler contributions - but listening to Sinead sing with Cooder and the Chieftains (She Moved Through the Fair is one track) I can well imagine her fitting into a bluegrass/old-time setting.
Why not wait and hear the results before making a judgment? (or is that a silly question
)

It's not a judgement..it's an observation..
I somehow don't see Dolly calling anyone to help her career but what do I know..
It seems to me that the new Country Music direction which is assumed by many new labels and producers is that the sum of two worlds will be better than that of one.
They are all looking for a better wheel.
Kid and Cheryl did a tune, and it was the tune that was well written, although if you actually listen to it and the lyric it is pretty slimy..but nontheless..well written and had a great hook..
Cheryl was, in my opinion the main draw on this one..the real talent..and she did a fine job, she has a huge following that was willing to cross over with her. Kid, , well although some have claimed he is a brilliant Country Singer..well me, I don't quite see it that way..I don't even think he is good in his own venue.
Having Cheryl Crow on a great song is not much of a risk...even with Kid as her duet partner..
If S.O. and Dolly hook up thats fine by me..
I wish them great success..
Dolly has strength in the market and brings everything to the table..at least for the Country Music market..
S.O. may be a fine singer, and maybe she is..but the end of the day statement will still be if she can sell records with Dolly...
IS she bringing a following of huge proportion along with her to the Country Video Channel ?
If she does, I guess she will on the Opry soon as well...afterall, it would be the right thing to do..
It's not a judgement, it's an observation..

JIM COHEN - In the police world where I once lived for 20 years you make a good Detective, you are on to something big. Charlie Manson did an interview a few years back and stated he was no longer behind bars but out in the woods having a good time with the rabbits, deer and squirrels. Could it be he met a fine looking deer and had a one night stand and pop... Marilyn Manson live on stage is the results. Good work Detective, now what kind of donut would you care for.
DOLLY - Could it be she likes S.O.(S.) and thinks this gal is not only a fine singer but dresser. Or is it money, or recording companies that see lots of $$$$$ as the results. I don't have the answer to all this BUT.....
Lord Willy Nelson is about to release a new CD with lots of new faces & voices to the country music world. If this is the new & exciting thing to do, so be it, but my $$$$ will stay put inside my Vanguard 500 fund. I prefer Willy and that's it, actually Ray Price & Willy.
What I would like to see if this continues is this, hey lots of money & entertainment here:
RAY PRICE & PINK FLOYD
GEORGE JONES & ICE TEA
BILL ANDERSON & KISS
FAITH HILL & PUBLIC ENEMY
VINCE GILL & IRON MAIDEN
KENNY CHESNEY & MADONNA
BROOKS & TINA TUNER
DUNN & IKE TUNER
DUNN & DUNN ESQ.......
and this list can go on & on & on.....

Those curious about Charles Manson can go to this website: www.charliemanson.com/home.htm
No, he's not out. Charles Manson, now in his sixties, lives within protective custody and allegedly receives more mail than any other prison inmate in the United States.
The other Manson is a cabaret metal stage act, and Kenneth you are a card for your suggestion that Dolly and he do an act together. What a wit you possess.
I work for the Australian distributor for Dolly Parton's last few albums and Sinead O'Connor's folk album (Sean-Nos Nua, all drawn from traditional Irish repertoire), so they couldn't possibly be connected could they.
I've often found that people tend to pigeonhole and lambast certain performers through ignorance rather than familarity of their style, topics of this nature tend to follow the same old route, someone drops a few comments, the usual mis-informed sort of tabloid stuff, a few others made reasoned comments, a few actual fans show up, the topic gets totally off-topic and then someone does a long winded post that usually ties up the whole thing.
For the record, I look forward to another bit of genre bending.
Oh, we also distribute some albums by Willie Nelson and Ray Price, buy their albums and make more work for me please.
