Going from F to E

Post by Dr. Hugh Jeffreys »

To the player who wanted to know how to get from F to E. There are many ways; here are two examples: 1. F----F#half dim. 7th, then to B7+9 to Emaj7. 2. F --- B half dim 7th then to B7b9+11 then to Emaj 7th. These can be very pleasing, depending on the voicings used.---HJ

Another possibility is to just modulate down the half step, which is the most powerful resolution. Also keep in mind that F7 substitutes for B7, because they share the tritone, Eb/D# and the A, so there's your 5>1.

Just a note. The standard "All The Things You Are" has that exact change. In the normal key of Ab, the chord changes are Dbmaj7, G7, Cmaj7. Just like Chas said, it's a tri-tone thing between the Dbmaj7 and G7 chords. And it's an effortless resolution. Nothing strange sounding about it.
[This message was edited by Jeff Lampert on 04 June 2002 at 09:31 AM.]
