Man I really liked him. Anyone know if he's still living, if so where and what? I'd sure like to know. Huge fan of his! Thanks

Cal Smith, a.k.a. Calvin Schoffner. Yes, Cal's still kickin'. I backed him on a few shows 2-3 years ago. He may still travel occasionally. I'm thinking of what would be the easiest way to get in touch with him. Don't know if he has a fan club. Maybe Tessier and Marsh Talent (listed in Nashville phone directory) could help you out, or maybe someone at the Ernest Tubb Record Shops will be able to steer you to a contact person who can supply his itinerary. Their phone number is 1(800)229-4288. Yeah, try them first because it's toll free. You can get his bio at http://music.lycos.com or just enter "Cal Smith" on your search engine.

Cal's a super nice guy, with a booming baritone voice that's smooth as a pound of butter. I had the pleasure of backing him several times, and he was one of the few stars I played behind who was completely void of pretense and ego. He singing was laid-back and effortless, and so was his personality. Wish there were more like him.

Both Buddys, Cal, Jack Green, Leon...ol E.T. could really pick 'em, could't he? Image
