Bakersfield Bound

Post by FIONA TOMANY »

Are you good folks out there aware of the excellent album that Chris Hillman but out a few years ago Called Bakersfield Bound on the Sugar Hill label. The steel playing is in the style of Ralph Mooney etc. played by J D Maness and is wonderfull.
A lot of people I mention it to have never heard of it. which is a real shame as it was the best album of the year in my opinon

Yeah, I have that CD... beautiful singing by Hillman & Pedersen and great playing by JayDee all the way! The sound mix is just right too: almost no drums, a little Telecaster, and LOTS of steel. Image

Yes, I have that CD.
A thought for anyone who loves this music, California Forumites, or if you happen to be in the area at the time... Pedersen, Hillman, Bill Bryson, and various members of such groups as Desert Rose and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers (Herb Pedersen, Bill Bryson, Roger Reed, Kenny Blackwell, and fiddler Gabe Witcher) present a benefit concert in the Santa Maria area each year. Last Spring it was Herb, Chris, Bill, and Monahan in a great Desert Rose "acoustic reunion" show. There was also a heady buzz (rumor) in & about the venue, regarding J D Maness also playing the show, but alas, it did not happen. :>(
It's a very friendly, intimate setting. Tickets are around ten or fifteen bucks, and also other festivities include "Santa Maria barbeque" dinner & complimentary wine tasting (I tasted a lot), courtesy of local wineries.
I will post the date & location whenever the schedule for this year's show is nailed down.
BTW, their playing & vocal harmonies at that show were "for the ages".
