Remember Dave Stogner, the Fresno Barn?

Post by Jason Odd »

In my usual wanderings on the internet in the hope of some juicy gem or tibbit on West Coast country music or Western Swing in general I accidently ran across a Rockabilly Hall Of Fame website for Dave Stogner.

http://www.rockabillyhall.com/DaveStogner.html

I'm sure a few folks here might know of him, but our main man Norm Hamlett worked for him before joining that 'new guy' Merle Haggard in 1967.
Actually it's a nice tribute and apparently there's a book about Stogner in the works.

I've got a Dave Stogner lp on Decca released around 1957 or 58. A guy named Jack Ancel on steel. Great lp

yeah, the decca lp was a classic. probably the best western swing lp ever--at least among lps conceived as an lp, rather than a conglomeration of singles. joe holley on fiddle too. the material on the decca lp was reissued on 2 different lps in the early 80s by a german label--each lp contained portions of the decca lp, plus other stogner material. i haven't checked, but i suspect that the cds dave's widow is selling are track for track home made cd burns of these german lps.

stogner had a wonderful voice for western swing. his versions of texas hambone blues, when my dreamboat comes home, and yes sir are the definitive versions, for my taste at least.

jack ancel was superb on steel. i saw stogner in 1980 and asked him about ancel--all dave said was that he was in madera, ca, and presumably not playing. would love to hear any news on him.

Actually that was something I wanted to know, I saw his name credited in Joe Goldmark's discography book, and I wondered if Jack went on to other things.

Norm Hamlett and Leo LeBlance played with him in the 1960s, while Buck Owens steel-standard guitarman Terry Christofferson once mentioned to me that he was a kid dancer on Dave's show in Fresno.

In 1965-66,Stogner hosted a daily TV show in Bakersfield called "Country Corner". He was truly a dandy. The studio musicians were Norm Hamlet on PSG (remembering him playing a three neck Fender or Bigsby, Dennis Payne (vocal and guitar), Kenny Eggenberg (vocal and guitar), Stogner's son..can't remember his name played bass guitar, and Sonny something played drums. Occasionally, the big boys of that era would drop by. Ol Buck, Don Rich and the rest of the Buckaroos did an entire 30 minute show one afternoon from the studio, which there is a photo of in Buck's Box CD selection. The great Wynn Stewart did the same thing and was masterful in selling "Rainbo" bread one of the advertisors on the program. Stogner's program and Cousin Herb's Trading Post are legendary here in Bakersfield. Sadly, there aren't any tapes that I know of that are available.
