Thom Bresh & "Buster" B Jones

Post by basilh »

WOW !!!!
The only way to describe the show put on by Thom Bresh (Nashville) & "Buster" B Jones (Virginia) at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Athlone this Sunday afternoon.

They enthralled a packed house with their musicianship, dexterity and jovial friendly nature, Nashville and Virginia must surely be proud of these extraordinary guitar giants.

Thom Bresh is the son of guitar legend Merle Travis, nowadays he travels throughout the U.S. and abroad, sharing the bill with fellow performers such as Randy Travis, Aaron Tippin and the Bellamy Brothers.
Thom, who is one of the pioneers and innovators of electronic computerized MIDI guitars, also makes regular appearances alongside Chet Atkins on tour. Not only is he a talented guitar player, he is also an accomplished impressionist.
Amongst his television appearances, he starred on Nashville Swing, Austin City Limits, Nashville Now, Music City Tonight and The People's Choice Awards.

"Buster" B Jones from Virginia, also comes with a formidable reputation, having won the 1998 first Guitar Player Sound Page Competition and the 1990 U.S. National Fingerstyle Championship.
Buster has toured with accomplished artists such as Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Albert Lee throughout North America, Europe, France and Finland.

I took the students from my class at The Academy to see the show, and they were enthralled not only by the playing, but the sound of the "Godin" guitars Thom and "Buster" played. Just Awesome !!!
The two musical ambassadors met my students and were MOST encouraging towards them. I would like to thank the country music fraternity, and Thom and "Buster' in particular for putting on a show that us mere mortals rarely if ever could see live here in Ireland.

Of the two, there is nothing to chose between them, BUT, I was talking to both in length and came to the conclusion that Thom could be persuaded to take up steel as a secondary instrument. This would be of immeasurable benefit to the steel guitar community. His style of finger picking would lend itself to the style of fingerpicking used by some of our greats..... the only problem is that I don't know who to recommend for Thom to listen to........ I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions.... Names and albums, tracks etc.

Hi Baz ,
I missed Buster last year , but everyone else is still talking about the gig .
Seeing him and Thom together is going to be like a dream come true .
For fingerpicking-style steel our own Roy Thomson on this forum had some excellent tab and sound files which he shared with us .
You could try getting in touch with him .
Good luck ,
Ingo .

I agree totally with you in regards to these two. They appear each year at the Chet Atkins convention in July and they always bring the house down when they play. They both have videos (both instructional and performance wise) which are great. I have seen both of these guys for about the last 5 years and they continue to impress everyone.

I saw Thom a few years ago demonstrating Godin guitars at the Frankfurt Music Messe (kind of like the Euro version of the NAMM show). You're right. He absolutely cooks.

WOW and WOW again .
Buster B Jones and Thom Bresh .
Tonight they played here in town on the last leg of their Godin promotional tour and I'm just back from that gig .
Like Basil said , visits by guitar giants are too far and few between over here in Ireland and the chance to meet two people of this calibre together is very rare indeed , and there I was sitting less than ten feet from these guys as they played .
My first instrument was and probably always will be the acoustic guitar , and my influence there has always been the style of people like Doc Watson , Chet Atkins , Jerry Reed , to name only a few . That made the gig tonight extra special for me .
I spoke to Buster over a few " buds " after the gig ( his buds , I don't drink Image ) and in particular about his thumbpicking style and if he ever played p.s.g. . He told me that he is actually considering having a pedal steel guitar built for himself in the near future .

Several months ago I also had the pleasure of meeting and listening to Buster"B" at a music store about 5 minutes from where I live.
He was promoting the Canadian made Godin Guitar. There were only about 25 of us sitting in front of him for about an hour and a half. What a great evening.
I did have about 15 minutes to talk to him afterwards and steel guitar was not mentioned
as I thought that would probably be the farthest thing from his mind.

I got to sit in with Thom last night at an outdoor Holloween function of sorts. What a great player and entertainer he is. He carries on the tradition of his father, Merle Travis, better than most any thumbpickers I have ever heard. Kudos to Thom Bresh. Best, Boomer
