CMA Awards??

Post by Smiley Roberts »

"Vocal Event Of The Year: George Strait (a duet with Alan Jackson) - "Murder on Music Row"

Sounds like a "token" award. Something to keep the "die-hard" fans quiet, for a while.
I don't like it. I think it should've gotten,"Song Of The Year"!!

..I'll have to agree with you Smiley, if for no other reason than they're murdering the English language as well as music. Unless the award was for a single performance of the song, it isn't an award for an event, it's an award for a song. If Alan and George had mooned the cameras while performing the song it would qualify for an award as a "vocal event". Roseann Barre singing the national anthem at the world series is a
"vocal event".

A recording by Alan Jackson and George Strait which is played thousands of times over dozens of radio stations doesn't qualify as a "vocal event" by definition. It could qualify as a "song of the year".

Smiley It didn't help when old George gets up and said he recorded the song as a "Joke".I guess he takes the traditional fans serious,As serious as he needs them and I guess he doesn't anymore. Too bad because he has blended with past and future. However It may have been a nervous Label thing. One thing that should be noted was;It was the only award George recieved this year.

I think George and Alan were happy to get the "Vocal Event of the year". George said,"he was shocked"! He's very smart, he's always blended with past and future, thats why he's where he's at!
"Song of the year" was very deserving to LeeAnn Womack's, "I hope you dance"! It sold more and played more, not to mention beautifully written!
But then again, I'm just one of those teens who buys those country cd's! Image Theresa
[This message was edited by Theresa Galbraith on 07 October 2000 at 06:06 AM.]

Theresa,
For better or worse, they could really get milage out of that song by doing a top40 Dance mix. It has great hook potential.

You're right, Erik, but of course, then they'd have to take the steel guitar out of the mix!

If I was Allen Jackson I would never do another duet with George,if for nothing more than lack of conviction.I think George was smart enough to know the implication of the song when he recorded it and left Allen hang out to dry.You go Allen!Shame on you George. Image

Sorry,
The majority of people didn't know what the hook line was.
Yeah, but it was played with steel on country radio first.

One thing to mention if George and Alan didn't record the song there would have been no mention of it on the awards show last week. It would not have recieved the national attention it did. For that I am glad they recorded it...Alan Jackson needed the popularity of GS to get this song heard,And it was...It may have been a Joke to George but he didn't seem at all embarassed to hold on to the throphy ..Hopefully he will still be stong enough to get one on his own next year...There must be more jokes out there to record.maybe one of my songs. Is this a new award category,or have they, always, had it in the past? If it's new,it looks like a "band-aid" to,temporarily,"stop the bleeding". Wonder if they'll have it,again, next year?

Vocal Event has been around for a while. It was designed to award a recording that brings two or more artists together who do not normally record as a "duet" or "vocal group". I think Buck and Dwight won it one year.
[This message was edited by erik on 07 October 2000 at 12:34 PM.]

I think Alan's props (the computers sitting on bales of hay) was a great gesture.

Folks, Theresa's post was only to mention the name of the song. The default programming of your browser makes it appear as an active link. It's not meant to be clicked. Image

Yeah, right. When I first got into music, the "Hits Of The Week" were on cylinders.
I was buyin' 'em,direct mail-order from ol' Tom Edison.
